i have read just about every article related to this subject
do i really need it?
i have a samung LN-S4051D and it supports video upscaling to 1080i thats what i paid for and thats what i want to watch my video in. if i go with a AV receiver that does not have video upscaling when i hook up my components to it will the signal come out in 480i or will the video come out how i have it set up for example my xbox 306 gives me the option of standard 480i or i can go all the way to 1080p. i have it set at 1080i and it looks good to me.
Also are the AV receivers video scales all that good and are the receivers with this option under $1000? should i let my TV deal with the video and let the Receiver handle the audio? if you have any experience with video upscaling please let me know about picture quality and make/model
Thanks

You didn't mention which TV you have or its native resolution unless the Samsung is the TV (not everyone has memorized every model number from every manufacturer).

The TV displays one and only one resolution. Something has to scale the video to the TV's native resolution. Now that can be a receiver, a dvd player, or the TV itself. Unless the receiver or dvd player can do a better job of scaling than the TV, there is no need for upscaling in either of those devices because the TV will do it.

If neither the receiver nor dvd player upscales, the video will reach the TV in the format in which it came from the source; ie a dvd player in interlaced mode will send 480i; in progressive mode it will send 480p. The TV will then scale it to its native resolution.

The problem is when the TV resolution is NOT a standard HD resolution - like 1366 x 768 (very common). If you have any other device scale the video to an HD resolution like 720p or 1080i, the TV will turn around and scale it AGAIN to 1366 x 768 (768p).

my tv is the samsung 40" lcd LN-S4051D everything i have read about my tv says its 720P/(1024 x 768).
this is my main question what if the dvd player upscales the video to 720p but the AV receiver only supports 480p in this case what will reach my tv the 480p or the 720p??

720p is 1280 x 720. 1024 x 768 is a non-HD resolution.

All receivers can support HD resolutions. If for example, you are using component video cables from a cable box to the receiver and the cable box outputs 1080i, the receiver will pass it untouched to the TV.

What you are talking about when you say the receiver 'only supports 480p' is deinterlacing (converting from interlaced to progressive scan). That is a truly worthless feature as the dvd player itself can deinterlace the 480i on the dvd to 480p.

If the dvd player scales 480i or 480p to 720p, the receiver will just pass it along. But as I said before, if your TV's resolution is really 1024 x 768, the TV will turn around and scale the 720p down ('decimate') to 1024 x 768, so why bother with scaling in the dvd player?

I think your TV's native resolution is 1366 x 768. I set components to use with my LNS-4092 at 720p and I think it looks better than 1080i.

Thanks that was what i wanted to know, if the 720P would go in the receiver at 720P and reach my tv at 720P untuched.
