Video up-conversion question

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been discussed, but I never really paid attention to video up-conversion because I didn't think I would be using it. But my Yamaha 661 is supposed to be delivered by Fed-X today, (hurry the hell up Fed-X!!! ), and I have some questions.

For some stupid reason, when Mitsubishi made my TV, they must not have thought 720p was important, because it outputs 480i/p, and 1080i. Also for some stupid reason, the PS 3 does not up-convert and 75% of PS 3 games are in 720p, so my TV outputs them at 480p!!! Lame.

So what I am wondering is, if I connect my PS 3 to the 661 and then go from the 661 to my TV via component cables, will the 661 convert the 720 games to 1080i?

All right, I just got the scoop from Yamaha. Apparently, I was confusing "up conversion" with "scaling". So unfortunately, the 661 will not "scale" the 720p content from my PS 3 to 1080i. Oh well. So I guess I just have to wait until Sony gets off its *** and comes up with a scaling update for the PS 3. But they're REAL busy doing important updates, like having icons for your chat sessions and being able to play PS 1 and PSP content on the PS 3.

Sony sucks!!!

Your TV is going to scale the image to its native resolution. If it is a HD TV as stated in your signature, then its resolution is NOT 480p or 1080i - those are the input formats it can accept, although I find it difficult to believe that it cannot also accept 720p.

If you get an image from the PS3 when the PS3 is outputting 720p then the TV definitely does accept it and regardless it will scale the 720p to its native resolution.

The only reason you would want anything other than the TV to scale the image first is if that device does a better job than the TV (of course you can't know that it will until you actually try it).

Nope. I've tried it. When I tried sending 720 from the PS 3, the TV just had a blank screen. Sucks.

Well then I guess all you can do is have the PS3 send 480i or 480p and let the TV scale. I'd try it both ways and see if the PS3 or the TV does the better job of deinterlacing.
