Video "Up-Conversion" / "Down Conversion"

I have a Pioneer Elite VSX24TX THX receiver that is about 5 years old and only has S-Video inputs/outputs as the highest quality video out/in. My TV is a Sony KP57HW40 which is a HD TV with component video (2 inputs) as the highest quality input. Currently, I plug in only one sat and DVD video directly into the TV component video inputs. Problem I have is that I now have 3 component video inputs sources (DVD player, 2 Satellite Receivers). I will likely be purchasing a latest technology DVD player e.g. BluRay. It is my understanding that the newer DVD's only have HDMI output and therefore with my current setup will not be able to plug this into my system.

I am interested in a newer HDMI receiver that has the "up-converting" but am not sure that if I plug a BluRay DVD player into, for example a Yamaha HTR-5990 (with Upconverting to Component and HDMI features) will this acutally work downwards, that is HDMI to Component ?

Thoughts / Recommendations.

It is not a given. You will have to enquire about it with the manufacturer or dealer.
