Video Hookup Options for Pioneer 1018

I've just got my new Pioneer 1018 this week. I don't use my current receiver to perform my video switching but want to try my Pioneer for this purpose.

Question is......I have a Sony progressive scan DVD player using component video outputs. If I run the component outs to the new receiver, do I also have to use component connections from the receiver to the TV.....or will the receiver use the HDMI connection from the receiver to the TV? (I will be running an HDMI connection from the cable box to the receiver and using the HDMI out from the receiver to the TV).

In my current setup I run my video connections direct from the components to the TV. I'm an idiot when it comes to using a receiver for video switching.....what are the advantages? Can I get upscaling from my progressive scan DVD player??

Thanks for the help.

It appears from reading the manual that your 1018 does will convert component signals and upscale to 1080P to HDMI out. Connect you Progressive scan DVD via component and it will automatically upscale.

Your manual is online at: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/StaticFiles/Manuals/Home/VSX-1018AH-K_OperatingInstructions0403.pdf

The manin page you want ot look at are the short paragraph on upscaling on page 7

HDMI and digital video conversion
This receiver is compatible with the HDMI digital video
format, providing you with high-definition digital video/
audio via a single cable.
High-quality sound formats such as DTS-HD and Dolby
TrueHD are supported while this receiver is also
compatible with the DeepColor feature. You can operate
this receiver in synchronization with your Pioneer
component that supports the HDMI Control function by
connecting your component to this receiver via HDMI.
Also, the built-in digital video converter of this receiver
makes both de-interlacing and up-scaling possible, and
analog video signals being input are converted and
output as digital video signals at the HDMI terminal.
And on page 34 and 35, the formats supported.

It appears you only have to connect a single HDMI cable to your TV.

Something to consider, try using the receiver only for de-interlacing (progressive, correct my verbage, anyone, if it's wrong/awkward). By not outputting the DVD image as progressive, that's one less instance of messing with the image. There should be the option to change the DVD player's output image from progressive to non-progressive.

The 1018 probably has a better chipset than your DVD player does for decoding the image. Especially, if you plan on having the 1018 change the image format from 480 to 720 or 1080.

Personally, the less times a file is altered the better, in my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. I now have the 1018 up and running.

However, I'm not able to view my DVD player when using the 1018 for video swithing. The HDMI works great from my cable box (I now have sound through the HDMI!!!!!).

First I tried using the components from the DVD player to my 1018 but couldn't get video using the HDMI out from the receiver to the TV. THEN, I tried using the component out from my 1018 to my receiver and STILL nothing.
I know it's something simple but I can't find it. Again, this is the first time I've used a receiver for video connections.

Any ideas? BTW...I made sure my cable box was off so the HDMI from it was not taking priority.

Loving everything else so far on the 1018 but still tweaking. As a side note the Ipod interface is terrific!!!!!

Hey, 32cjones. From the owners manual, it looks like you need to assign the component video inputs to a source. That's mentioned on page 19, and the description of how to do that in the menus starts on page 67.

Once that is set up, you shouldn't have trouble viewing the DVD player using the single HDMI connection that you have from the receiver to your TV.

Please let us know if that did it, or if you're still having trouble. Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem and have not found a solution yet.

Comcast DVR and PS3 connected to Pioneer 1018 via HDMI work just fine for HDMI output to Panasonic plasma.

I have a Panasonic DVD Recorder (combo VHS and DVD). I've connected it via component to the Pio 1018. It comes into the Pio on component 1 and audio is connected into DVD.

I've gone to page 67 and gone into input settings. Have set DVD for digital in to Off, HDMI In to Off, and Component In to Comp-1.

I get audio from the DVD player, but no video, just black screen.

I'm really interested to hear how you get yours working b/c I'm stumped!

Welcome to the forum, gryphon! Let's see if we can get you up and running.

The first thing that I'd check is whether or not the video conversion feature is set to "ON" (which should be the default). How to do that starts near the bottom of page 72 in the manual under the "Setting the Video options" section. The menu option is the first one on page 73, "V. CONV". You want that to be set to "ON", at least initially.

There is also a note on the bottom of page 15 (the page that shows the video conversion diagram) that reads:
"1 • If the video signal does not appear on your TV or flat panel TV, try adjusting the resolution settings on your component or display. Note that some components (such as video game units) have resolutions that may not be converted. In this case, try switching Digital Video Conversion (in Setting the Video options on page 72) OFF."

Just some things to get you started, if you haven't tried those already. Please let us know if that works, and if not, we'll keep trying!

Wow, thanks for the fast reply, Adam.

Can't believe I missed that. Works a charm now.

Do you think the setting on the DVD player for TV type should be 16:9 480i or 480p? I'm not sure what works best for upconverting between all these components.

Thanks again. What an incredibly helpful board!

I'm glad that it's working now!

Regarding setting the DVD player to 480i or 480p, I'd suggest switching between the two settings and deciding which one gives you a better picture. Part of it will depend on which has a better deinterlacer: the DVD player or the TV. I honestly don't know how the Pioneer 1018 will impact it. Hence, I'm just going to suggest that you try both and use the one that looks the best.

cool. I'll play with it. Now I'm off to the speaker forum to see if it's as amazingly helpful as this one!
thanks again.
