Video direct to TV or through receiver - is there a preference

Is it better to run video sources direct to the TV as opposed to running through a receiver first and using the receiver as a switch. I am using a Yamaha RX-V2400. My understanding is that this particular receiver doesn't do any actual video processing but just allows a pass through of HD sources.

If you have more than one video source, it's generally more convenient to run through your receiver.

Also, if you are planning on decoding formats like DTS-master, then you will need an HDMI connection from your BluRay to your receiver. It's not terribly likely that your BluRay has two HDMI outs you want to use.

If you are single source, and not running such modes, I see no reason not to just plug it straight in and skip the receiver being in the way.

Thanks, my receiver doesn't have HDMI so I'd need to run component through the receiver or HDMI straight to the TV. Since my receiver doesn't do any video conversion I was wondering if there would be any potential degradation of the signal going through the receiver instead of straight to the TV or if it was even worth worrying about.

When video switching was somewhat new to receivers there were some that had issues doing it, but with current receivers I don't think you will have a noticeable loss in quality.

I've never run video through my receiver. It isn't a preference, it is because most receivers need to be on or you will get no video. I don't know about other brands, but the current crop of Yamahas are able to pass HDMI without being on.

Will an instrument find signal degradation? Probably. Will you notice any? No. Not unless there's something wrong with the unit.
