Video direct to the TV or through the receiver?

Just curious if most people connect their video sources directly to the TV or through their A/V receiver? I understand the concept that going direct it probably more pure, but do you really lose anything going through the receiver? Even a good receiver?

Some folks believe that the less processing a signal undergoes, the better the picture (assuming you start with good signal). That said, I have not noticed a difference between connecting my DVD player directly to the TV or routing it through the receiver. My cable comes via component to the receiver with upconverts it to HDMI. The HD channels look great.

Same here. I have mine direct now, but I was short a cable at first and was going through the receiver with both DVD and the cable box. I saw no noticable difference when I changed it to direct on both.

My Yamaha receiver doesn't have HDMI but my plasma does. Getting a DTV HD box in a week and thinking of going direct to the TV via HDMI versus component through the receiver. I've read here where some people are having problems with HDMI and DTV DVR HD receivers. Back to the 'ol HDMI vs. Component debate.

I connect all my video directly to the TV and my audio to the receiver.

Thus way, I select what I want to watch via the TV and what I want to listen to via the receiver through the receiver.

I also run an analog audio feed from each video source to the TV as well. this way, I can watch the TV using it's internal speakers and not be forced to use the receiver. ..works out great for mrs w's excercise videos and the grandkid's cartoons.

Very true. I had forgotten about this. I often watch one thing while listening to another.

It's not so much that as I can barely stand that purple dinosaur when I can barely hear him. I most certainly don't want to hear him through five speakers and a subwoofer.

With my old reciever ($200 RCA) the signal was noticeably degraded when routed through the reciever. With my current setup (Denon 2805) I can't tell any difference in PQ routing the signal directly to the tv or through the reciever. I prefer going through the reciever so I don't have to keep changing inputs on the tv everytime I switch between tv, dvd, and my ps2.

I try to run everything I can into the receiver. I find it helps simplify switching audio/video sources. Everything now comes out on one hdmi cable to the tv and haven't noticed a difference.

I like the way Markw does it. It gives you the greatest number of options, and I almost never watch regular TV with the whole system fired up. I also have a $100 Harmony Remote which does just about anything you want with one button push.

No special cables are needed to connect your receiver to your sub woofer. I use $15 Radio Shack Gold " RCA" cables. When you get your new sub in, check the manual to see if Klipsch recommends a "one into two" splitter. That's the only thing to check on about the connection.
