Hi All,

Does anybody have any opinions on running the video signal through a AV Pre/Pro as oppossed to directly to TV? I'm running component video from DVD and HD box directly to TV currently and am debating switching it to the preamp for remote control ease but don't want to degrade the video quality.

Any input would be greaty appreciated.

Thanks! Pete

Good question Pete..as I am ready to make my final connections I wondered the same thing as well, specifically if upsampling from the AV to the TV is as good as a direct feed to projector/TV. I was always told the less connections over less space always wins...I'll be curious for some input!

I think you will lose any on screen capability for your AV receiver if you dont wire it through that.

I have tried it both ways on more than one occasion and have never seen a signal degradation issue ever. I think if you want to simplify your system, then it may be worth a few hours to hook things up and see how it looks to your eyes. But, I haven't heard a single person who has hooked equipment up through an A/V receiver actually make a claim that video was affected. Especially with newer A/V receivers.

I find that A/V receiver reviews that don't include video information are missing out an entire portion of what A/V receivers are supposed to do. The entire V section of that receiver! I would hook it up through your receiver and enjoy the added convenience and be one of the millions who don't see any problem doing it that way.

Convenience versus picture quality

If you run video through your pre/pro it will provide you with a more convenient switching method between sources and it will provide you with the ability to use on screen menus for your pre/pro set up.

If all video sources are directly connected to the tv you may theoretically get better video quality (depending on the video switching capability of your pre/pro. However, you will have to switch between sources on your tv to watch dvd vs. cable vs. tv (when using your pre/pro you will simply use the monitor in connection) and you will not be able to use on screen set up menus for your pre/pro (unless you make a connection from monitor out on the pre/pro to monitor or video in on your tv along with the other source video connections).

All in all I much prefer sending video through the pre/pro for convenience and I do not notice and video degradation in my system.
