Video connection problem

Hi There: Have a new AV receiver and are trying to utilize S Video for all components. Works great with DVR and DVD but not with older analog components such as VCR and camcorder. TV is about 7 years old, has S video and two separate AV inputs and one AV output. If I hook up the DVR and DVD to the TV, switched through the receiver on SVideo, all works well. Adding a VCR with no SVideo, just component outputs and inputs results in no video output but audio is fine. One solution is to scrap all the sVideo cables from the components and wire a video composite* cable between the components, receiver and TV. This works but I really want to get the higher video quality that Svideo offers. I could wire the VCR directly to the TV inputs but then I cannot take advantage of the receiver's sound. Is this a common problem with older analog devices? Same problem happens when I connect my camcorder to the front panel inputs, audio is fine but no video. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

I think that you could run the VHS directly to the TV utilizing its composite (yellow) video input. Then all you would need to do is switch inputs on the TV when you watch the VHS (audio can still come out form the receiver).

If, however, your s-video is on the same television input as the composite and overrides it, your only (cheap) recourse will be to upgrade the receiver to one that switches from composite to s-video. You should be able to find these for around $200 easy.

Hi Clint: Thanks, that's a simple and great idea, however, I made a "woops". I meant to say composite instead of component when referencing cables. Does this change things. It appears that I cannot mix analog and digital video outputs within the same system. Bought the Pioneer VSX-815-K receiver based on your review. All I can say is WOW!! What a great receiver! And your site is terrific!

Only DVI and HDMI send digital video signals from local components. You didn't mention them so I would say, you have different forms of analog video. Can the TV video input be selected? Try it, worth a shot.

Yes, I connected the VCR to the AV2 video input on the TV and left the audio cables at the receiver. Works like a champ! Thanks!
