VESAs DisplayPort Poised to Directly Compete with HDMI

The newly-developed DisplayPort interface standard designed to unify the desktop and notebook PC markets to a common high-bandwidth display interface has been approved by the member companies of the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). DisplayPort enables for the first time a common interface for both external and internal display connections within a PC notebook or a desktop display. This approach allows for standardized connections between source devices and display devices, such as LCD panels, without the need for signal translation. DisplayPort appears to be a direct competitor with HDMI - and with Dell, HP, and Lenovo on board it seems to pack a punch - at least in the PC world.

Arrrgghhh!!!

What is with the PC indsustries desparate need to completely ignore established standards at all costs and come up with it's own thing - every time!?!

Well, 1080i, 720p, and the 16:9 standard already exists, so let's do 16:10 instead! Sure, 1280x768 or 1920x1200 - that's what they'll love.

HDMI... ummm... no. Let's make it totally and completely the same - but well call it something else and not make it compatible... sweet.

The article doesn't get into any advantage that this new connection offers over HDMI and sounds much more like HDMI than anything else. What a silly waste of time for VESA who still hasn't convinved LG to make plasmas with standardized mounting points on the back.

New video standard

If they ensure equipment compatability from the start and the hardware and cables are cheaper, they could give HDMI a run for their money.

So who make a good VESA TV?

I'm in the market.:(

Maybe my HDMI 1.1 TV can be put in a bag with the HDMI AVR's.

WHY would they do this? Is there not enough problems and confusion with HDMI.:(  :(  :(

There you go.

Another manufacturer trying to push a new "standard" with the hope that it might actually become a standard, making them unimagenably rich. Or is it the promised standard that HDMI is struggling to achieve?

I still dont understand why did they choose the 16:10 aspect ratio.
