If someone thinks that the upscaling of a 480i signal to 1080i/p even with the best HTPC out there can be "near" what those HD-DVD players can do, it's because they simply don't have the video chain they would need to appreciate the difference.

Sad but true...
I think this comment was to me. You do realize you ultimately agreed w/ me , don't you?

Considering my current set-up, it doesn't make sense to buy a HD DVD player. And this applies to the majority. Therefore when the dust settles upgrade the player when I up-grade my PT AE900u to something that does 1080p

Gennum VXP and Realta HQV are the only chip out there bringing everything to 1080p first then downscaling to 720p. Everything else out there is doing 1080i to 540p then 720p. That's why the difference is not "big".
I'm sure you already understand he difference between 540p and 1080i. Your comment here confused me. To say that the DAC's are scaling to 1080i first is interesting. 1080i looks the same as 540p to the DAC's. In ,ost cases it is what your end product does with it that will decide if interlacing is to take place. Therefore, if you are correct, The projectors will take a 540p signal (which can be displayed as 1080i or 540p) and up-scale it to 720p.

Now, as for difference, not much w/ the exception of high chance of artifact with the interlaced image.

Ideally, and it is possible with todays tech, we would have a 1080p--which is what many are recoding w/ today i.e.LOTR--onto a 1080p dvd displayed on a 1080p projector and or monitor. There would be no up-scaling or down-scaling involved. This should be avaiable by the time the PS3 is out.

I was able to try a pre-production Blu-Ray player at 1080p with my 1080p projector. That's what I'm talking about. No contest. :D

Here's an interesting comment from Kris Deering on the same subject. He's the guy doing the Secrets DVD players Shout-out. He was with Stacey Spears to perform those tests:

"This is almost the same arguement that is being made with the HD-DVD vs SD-DVD thing in another forum. We A/B'ed Phantom of the Opera last night on the Sony Ruby. We had the HD-DVD going through the Anthem D2 (Gennum VXP) and de-interlaced to 1080P. Then we had the Marantz DV9600 outputting 480i and being processed to 1080P via the D2 as well and compared the same scenes in A/B loops. The difference was EXTREMELLY drastic. Nothing subtle about it. This was with a 6' wide screen at about 1.9x screen width back. Anyone saying that there isn't a difference is using either a small screen or just isn't taking full advantage of the formats. There is just no way around it."

The clerk at best buy is most likely an 18 year old kid still living with his parents and doesnt own an HDTV. Who in their right mind cares what these guys think.
Clearly, you care. The other poster dropped the issue already.

BTW - If you really have NO respect for the people that enable the stores you like to shop at, perhaps you should consider not shopping there anymore. Go to a place that you respect, and will appreciate your business more. Everybody wins.
