(very) entry level sub

I'm on a (very tight) budget these days, but I still need to beef up the bass in my room. I have an Akai "bookshelf" system that sounds good enough not to want me run and buy all new gear, but the bass is lacking. Since the room is smallish I've been considering either the Yamaha YST-SW-215 8" 150 watt, or the Dayton 10" 100 watt sub. they're about the same price (around $100).
Any recommendations??
Also, in these situtations (not having a sub pre-out), you hook up the sub to the high level B speaker output, right?

I can't recommend either of those subs as I have never heard either.

but about your second question,
you should connect the sub to your receiver's A speaker level outputs
and then connect the speakers to the sub's speaker outputs.

I don't know what would happen if you used the B outputs, you could try it and see what happens.

Having owned a Yamaha sub before, I'd have to say go with the Dayton. Too bad they are out of the 12" model (300-634).

B speaker outputs should be fine. The sub won't be drawing any current, it is just stripping off signal.

I'd recommend that you go with the 12" Advent. They've been selling on Amazon for 79 bucks with free shipping. I've heard them and they are quite impressive for the money...equalling the performance of subs costing a couple hundred.

fyi: Looks like the Advent subwoofer on Amazon has gone up to $100, and is sent from Part(s) Express - no more free shipping.

I think it's still a good buy for this unit, but this does get it closer to the Dayton prices. I've listened to the Advent, but not the Dayton (10" or 12"), so I don't know which is the best bang-for-buck subwoofer. My experience with the Advent was favorable enough that I would buy it again if my budget was limited to $150 or so.
