I gave my son my 10 year old Yamaha AV receiver....maybe a 565?? Cannot remember the actual model. He has hooked up two speakers and now wants to connect his 42" plasma. I thought he could just use the HDMI cable I gave him but the receiver has a different input than the HDMI cable? He also has the old yellow/red/white cables but not sure how to hook them up. I know this is basic but he is away at college so I cannot just mess with it remotely...

thanks

There are any number of ways to hook it up.

With an older receiver:

CABLE BOX (HD with HDMI) (or DVD player or Blu-ray player w/HDMI) - Connect HDMI from the cable/DVD/BD box directly to the 42" display.
CABLE BOX AUDIO (or DVD/BD) - connect digital audio out to the Yamaha receiver

Not sure how many HDMI inputs are on the TV nor what sources there are in this setup.

The cheap red/white/yellow cables are for non-HD sources and non-digital audio and typically will not be used.

Help

There is no cable box....he is in college dorm and they just run cable from wall outlet to TV.....from what he is telling me, the old Yammy does not accept the HDMI cable end....it is not the same as what is on the new TV??

Does that make sense??

If the TV is getting the cable feed directly, then there should be an 'AUDIO OUT' from the TV. Probably a DIGITAL AUDIO OUT connection. This digital audio connection is what will carry audio from the TV tuner to the receiver.

Throw the HDMI cable away, it won't be used. Okay, don't throw it away, but seriously, it is entirely pointless and needless.

You have to hook video sources to the receiver to send it to the TV. Since the TV is the only source for cable, then you don't need to feed that video back to the receiver, you just need the audio. Feed the audio from the TV to the receiver and that's it.

Stop talking about HDMI, stop thinking about HDMI - there is no HDMI with what you have described so put the cable down and walk away.

FYI: Providing exact make/model of all products used in the setup will allow for very specific and details answers, otherwise you will get somewhat 'general' answers. But, this general answer is applicable for 95%+ of displays with integrated TV tuners.

^ ^ ^ there is your answer. BTW, it is not a 565 because I have one and it is 4 in 1 out HDMI :) The TV should decode up to ch 100 ish of the signal, then send the sound as BMX said, to the AVR.
