VERY basic question

Please don`t laugh (too hard) at the noobie question.

When setting up my subwoofer, I have read that placing it in a corner is the best way. I have also read to face it towards the enter of the room. So I guess the correct way is to place it in a corner facing the center of the room not touching either wall?

thanks for any input.

The best place for a subwoofer is where ever it sounds best in a room. Sometimes this is in a corner and sometimes it isint. You really have to play around with location to try and get the best performance. Most people put subwoofers in corners because they are out of the way and you can get more bass reinforcement by placing one in a corner. You do not want it to touch any walls or anything though because it will most likely vibrate making noise that you dont want. I think you will notice a dramatic difference in bass by trying your subwoofer in different locations so really the only correct answer is play around with it and do what sounds best to you.

The corner will indeed give the most sheer output. Unfortunately, more times than not, it will also give the lumpiest bass response since it maximally excites all the room modes.

That said, it may still be the best PRACTICAL place. You can always do the crawl around method. Put the sub where your ears are (yes - up in the air too) and crawl around until you find the place that has the best bass (not necessarily the most). Once you find that, put the sub there.

It's crude and people will think you're nuts when you're doing it but it can work pretty well.

Lots of info avaiable at teh A/V University on the main page of this site. From everything I've read, corners give you boomy bass, so be warned! Unfortunately, practicality of placement will often win out over the ideal placement of the woofer. I've messed around with the placement of the sub (no crawling) and I've had it in at least three different places. In some places it rattles the windows, and in other places the desk or something else rattles which completely ruins the movie experience.

In the end I placed the sub in a corner and have been very happy with it. Haven't really heard any 'boominess' (whatever that is) in the corner, but what I *DO* know is that there is NO annoying rattling and the bass sounds damned fine to my ears :p

Perhaps true bliss is not knowing what you're missing :)

Oh, an RTA is definitely a better way to go than crawling - but hey, not everybody has one - but we've all crawled at one time or another :D

Had my sub in the corner for about a year. Started reading this site and playing with it's location. It now sits right nest to the tv, has more output and is cleaner. Put it where you think it sounds the best. Only way to find that out is to try different locations.:D

Good Luck
