Verizon fast internet

I was offered a faster internet free but the person on the phone from Verizon said in order to get 300 fast internet their tech person has to come to the house & change the wiring . Is this normal thing ?.. The cost of home visit is $190

Something about the older boxes not being able to support faster speeds. When I moved into current house, I told them I wanted the same $30 50mb plan I had at our intermediate house. The said they no longer had a 50mb plan, the slowest they had was 100mb, but the box at this house didn’t support those speeds because it was older.

I argued with them back and forth for a while, threatened to just sign up with Cox instead, and they ultimately split the cost with me.

High speed internet is a freaking joke. Most people don’t need the speeds they Pay for, the profit margins are insane, and speeds are artificially throttled based on what you are willing to pay. I was on the phone with a rep once and they doubled my internet speed with a few taps of the keyboard.

My current speed is 150mb the rep initially would boost it to 300mb from their end but called back and said the Ethernet wire needs to be changed and requires a visit from tech

But I don’t understand , the Verizon box is outside on the side of the house and RG59 coaxial wire is the only wire that’s coming out of the box which gets connected to the modem and the Ethernet wire is used to hook up to PCs or whatever else or use it wirelessly.
So where does the Verizon tech going to run the Ethernet from ?

They very well may need to ensure your cabling to the demark will support a newer higher speed router.

May want to ask if the fiber is to your house or if that is what they will pull to the house.
My good friend was lucky in this respect. Fiber was to each house on his street but not everywhere in town.

I'm on a 100mb plan. I don't even need that; other than waiting a little longer for a game to download, I see no advantage over when we had 25mb or 50mb. When my 2 year promo expires this summer I'm going to ask what plan will let me keep paying $40 monthly like I am now.

If history is any indication, verizon will say their hands are tied. I will threaten to switch to cox. They will again say they can't accommodate me. I will then switch to cox. Within 2 weeks I will receive half a dozen mailers and phone calls from Verizon with "please come back" promos for the same price (if not cheaper) as I'm paying now. In 2024 I'll be doing the same dance with cox and wind up back on Verizon.

It's ridiculous how many times I've done this over the past 10 years.

What in the world was being used at the house previously? Cox? It is possible that if the previous homeowner used a different service, that the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) on the side of the house is out of date for the current services that Verizon is providing and will need to be upgraded. I'm not sure that you paying for this fee, then paying for the service makes a ton of sense, and you can argue it, but it may not be something you win at if the upgrade is actually needed. I'm not positive this is a 'wiring' upgrade as much as it is a equipment upgrade.

Ah! That was the term I couldn't remember in my first post, when I said "boxes."

FIOS came to our area recently, where Optimum has dominated. After years of delay on fiber optic from Cablevision, it suddenly became available. Optimum Tech came out and ran a new fiber optic line from the street pole box into the house and into a new upgraded Fiber Gateway modem. He recommended keeping the old cox cable in case we were not happy with the speed. Was on a 500 plan previously but was getting 300 speed at best.
ISP pricing and install charges all over the place. The above install was free and are giving a year of free charge on new modem. The final product? The speed remains the same at 300 tops.

I'm on 50mps and I'm ok with it and 4K content looks great. Not a gamer and I'm glad I'm not.

It's Verizon fiber optics box on the side of the house installed in 2008. The Verizon FO is up the box only according to rep the Rg59 coaxial is to the rest of the house. Not sure who is right & who wrong on the FO coming all the way to the modem.

I pay for the faster speed. I pay for 1.2GB and I regularly get around 950 Mbps. I need it for work, don't stream 4K normally.
