Velodyne VX-10 or Athena Audition AS-P4000?

Hi,

I've got a very, very, very small budget, preferrably about $150, but I'm torn between staying within my budget and getting a good deal. Here are my current options:

1. Velodyne VX-10 for $145.76 shipped
2. Athena Audition AS-P4000 for $175.33 shipped (next cheapest is about $199 w/o shipping)
3. Energy S10.2 used for $195obo (availability unknown, pickup)

Any recommendations? It's going into my bedroom of <1400 sqft. It'll be placed on a wooden floor that transitions into carpet where I will be seated (would front or down firing be better for this awkward condition?). I listen to about 50% music, 25% movies, 25% video games.

I would go for the Athena or Energy subwoofer. The VX-10 doesn't have the amplification behind it to be at all useful for movies.

The S10.2 and AS-P4000 are far better subs. I found the S10.2 to have a very smooth sound, while the AS-P4000 to have a more tactile, theatrical sound.

I agree with sheep. I have the VX and it's a good little secondary sub in my system, but not enough oomph for your primary.
I've heard both the Athena and Energy, I find the Energy better in every way. Not head and shoulders better but more clean depth, more musical with a good HT kick. Whichever you decide on enjoy.
BTW, good prices on all, is that U.S.$?

Thanks for the recommendations guys and yes, the prices are in US$. I found the Energy used on craigslist and the Athena is on sale at audioadvisor.com. I'll probably stop by a Best Buy after work and test out the Athena, which I'm leaning towards because A.) it's cheaper and B.) it's new with a warranty. I don't know how much mileage the Energy has had put into it, but if the seller's willing to bring it down a bit I just might pull the trigger. That is unless anyone makes a good argument for the VX-10.

Was browsing eDealinfo.com and found the Athena for $150 shipped through Amazon. Made the order about half an hour ago. Didn't get a chance to hear it, but from what you guys said earlier its sounds better than the VX-10 and a pretty good deal at the price. Plus, Amazon has a 30-day return policy in case it doesn't work out for me.

You should do listen to it anyway. :)

Yeah, I definitely listen to it before it comes in next week. I might even stop by best buy today and get a taste of what's coming. Thanks again for the advice! :D

New items, Athena, always seems safer, especially with BB's return policy.
It's not that the VX is bad sub, it just does not go as low in the Frequency range as the other 2. Plus it may a little underwhelming in your room. Enjoy the Athena.

Hey guys sorry for being a tiny bit off topic, but How does the Athena compares with the Dayton 12inch at ************ for 143 bucks backordered?

Will the Athena be head and shoulders above the Dayton even though it's smaller? Thanks.. I have been waiting for the freaking Dayton to go back in stock but it will take awhile.. and found the athena so what do ya think? :D

What did they say about the Dayton that made them prefer it over the Athena? Sucks to hear about this after I bought the Athena. I guess I'll have to find someplace to hear the Dayton and compare to the Athena once it's in.
