Velodyne ULD-12 woofer is rotted

The woofer on my old Velodyne ULD-12 has a rotted rubber attachment from the fiber cone to the metal frame. There is no repair/replacement available but Velodyne has offered a large discount for a trade in of the old ULD-12. I can get a DD-12 for $1080 slight cosmetic imperfection. I was told the retail is $2999. I know nothing about this woofer. The website does not help much. Perhaps you can offer me some insight here about this woofer. I was looking at the SVS and Hsu subwoofer but then this deal came up when I inquired about a replacement woofer for the old Velodyne. Thanks

You dont want that nasty ole DD-12. Just call Velodyne and tell them you worked out a deal with me and tell them to let me have it for $1080.

It is a 3k sub and I dont think you can go wrong at that price.

That is a pretty good deal. I'd jump on the Digital Drive 12.

tell them you'll add some more money (difference between the DD12 and DD15) to get the DD-15 to up your upgrade factor. that will give you more bang for your new audio item.

I emailed Velodyne today about the DD-12 and my room size, they said I need the DD-18. I don't even want to think about what that would cost. Perhaps a DD-15 upgrade or just the DD-12 and then add a second one down the road if I don't think the subwoofer is gratifying. When I add in the kitchen area, cu ft. measurements go to 9200 cu ft or so. Without it, I am at about 6000 cu ft. (vaulted ceilings). I'll have to ask if I get a discount on the DD-18. Thanks for the heads up.

9200cu.ft?!?! Holy crap! You're going to need multiple DD18s to fill that.

The best Velodyne will do for me is a DD-12. So, I plan on hitting the garage sales and looking for a old ULD 12 or so and ask about rebuild parts all over and get the same deal. Just kidding of course. Velodyne is very gracious to even be offering this deal to me. How would two DD-12's be versus say a single DD-18?

Rat,

Your room requires at LEAST 4 DD-12s.

You may find it easier to fill by going with a ported subwoofer from another company.

if your old ULD12 was sufficient enough for you ... try the DD12 first. if it's not enough, go for another.

I was just getting ready to try it out. My A/V room is a family room and kitchen. The family room has a vaulted ceiling going from 8' to 12'. The family room is about 4500 cu ft. Based on the Velodyne website, I am supposed to calculate the kitchen as well which adds a bunch of area. My floors are tile, the room does echo. I would like to eventually make a room a bit more sound friendly. I think I may replace the ULD-12 with the DD-12. Test it out and see what it does to my cu ft. If it just can not do it, sell or hold on to it for my future room. I have a small pair of Sonus Faber speakers that I will use with the DD-12 should I get it. I do not have surround yet.

For a 4500cf room I'd try and swing a deal with the DD15 or DD18(surely they would do a deal for you), this is also Velodyne's recommendation for that size room. I realize it opens up to a larger area so you could see if its livable until you close the room off(for 9500cf velodyne recommend dual 1812's:eek: ).

My listening area is open to the dining which makes the total area 3500cf(and more when the hallway door is open) and my DD15 easily fills it(to achieve calibrated reference levels the sub volume is at 7%, 25% is scary and hits 123db at my seat, and 40% is insane:D )

Also the DD15/18 are THX ULTRA 2 certified, have a mike input also on the front and use a larger magnet structure(24lb compared to 19.3lb for the DD10/12)

cheers:)

My room is ~8000 cubic feet and I run a single 15" sub. It fills the room and sounds great with plenty of punch and is blended in well with my system. My plan was two run two of the same subs but I really think the one is just fine.

So I might just forget about the Velodyne option since the DD15 or DD18 are not an option as trade in's. What other manufactuer might I look at that would do the job? I see Hsu and SVS mentioned a lot here. Would their 15" be satisfactory for my cu ft space you think? Would I still be in the $1000 ball park? Thanks yet again.

So you're saying they won't give you a similar discount off a DD15/18? If thats the case I'd take the DD12 and then without taking it out of the shop say you want trade the DD12 for a DD15/18:rolleyes: Surely if they'll give you a 2k discount on a DD12 they can give you a 2k discount on a DD15/18, whats the difference to them? their logic does not compute:confused:

cheers:)

Hsu and SVS don't have 15inch models, but they have beefy 12s, and SVS has dual 12s. The main reason they can reach high SPL is because they use ported enclosures. However, they don't have all the bells and whistles that the DD series has, not the smaller footprint.

For $1100, you could almost get a PB-12Plus/2($1300ish), which is highly recommended sub among some of the members.

Or the PB12-NSD/2. Closer to the $1,000 mark shipped than the Plus/2.
