Velodyne SPL-1200R vs SVS PB12-ISD

Ok, so today I was just driving down the road and saw an audiophile store that I had never noticed before. Decided to stop in and take a peek because I'm still looking for a sub to finish off my system, well at least for now :) Anyways, I'm moving into a loft in Downtown KC so I'm going to need a pretty good sized subwoofer to make some noise in this huge space, the area is about 740 sq Ft with 20 foot ceilings. So close to 15000 cubic feet of space. there is about a 12 foot or so wall that seperates the living room and kitchen area from the bedroom and bathroom, but its open above.

So thats the layout, as soon as I get a floor plan I'll post it to find the best positioning, but on to my question, has anyone heard these two subs side by side? I know the Velo is about twice the price of the SVS, but the Velo is about the only high end sub I've ever been able to listen to. I'd rather spend around the $600 for the SVS, but could probably stretch the budget to around $800 if I have to. I know its a huge amount of area to fill, but I want some bass to throw some parties. Should I be considering a DIY job with a few say dual JL subs and a nice amp instead?

Sorry for the long post guys, but I had alot on my mind after listening to that Velo this afternoon.

Dude, get a cylinder. It will have a much easier time getting the High SPL's out then the Velo or PB-12ISD.

I have not heard the aforementioned SVS sub, but I liked the Velodyne. Its was clean, visceral, and sexy. That said, it will not meet your SPL requirements for that room, or sexy parties

I agree. Velo SPL-R and parties do not belong in the same sentence.
the SPL-R is supposed to be "audiophile-music" quality sound.

if you want the Velo brand, go for the DLS-R models ... at least you get to control your subwoofer FROM the bar/sofa/across the room

I'm more or less just asking how they compare in sound, the Velo sounded great, tight... clean....good volume, not enough oomph for me though. its the first quality sub ive heard, so im wondering how it compares to the SVS which ppl reccomend all the time

I would take the Velo over the SVS because of how clean it sounded. BUT, your looking ot fill a big room, much bigger then the SPL series limits.

Too much space for either...both are great subs BTW, but the SVS +/2 squared will be the only thing close to enough.

That is a pretty giant area to fill. I was looking at lofts down there just this past weekend. I would say an SVS tube or maybe the velo DLS-5000R. Thats twice the volume of my HT room and I am looking into the same size of sub. That should say something:D

like others have said...
With a room that big, it's going to be difficult for any 1 sub to fill.
You may have to get 2 subs. But since your on a buget, you might have to DYI.

Call or email SVS, and see what they have to say. From my experience, and others in this forum, their pretty good and figuring out what works best for your room.

Questions? Call: (703) 845-1472 or E-mail us at: sales@svsound.com

As a happy 10" Velo owner, I can testify that mine will blow the windows out of my 3000 cu. ft. room (cleanly) if I want. I hear a lot of good things about the SVS subs, too. I have the feeling that some of you guys out there don't have wives/families. I don't usually crank my system to reference levels unless I'm alone in my house. You must have no neighbors.

You and I must have different definitions of "blow the windows out of my 3000 cu. ft. room (cleanly)." For me a ten inch would not be able to do that in that size of a room. I would love to see inroom FR plots if you have them to see what output you are getting and if it is true I will apologize.
