Velodyne DPS-12 volume control

I haven't purchased the DPS-12 yet, but I've listened to it and love it. The only problem I see is during setup with the volume control. I've read that the faster the light blinks the louder it is, but there is no digital or analog read out. Is the only effective way to setup my system with the 12 is to use a sound level meter?

The only way to setup ANY sub is with an SPL meter.
