If the 1500 keeps with the same sound as the other yamaha subwoofers, I would go with it.

It looks on paper to go much lower, but that FR 16hz is at -10dB. The velodyne is at -3dB. Still, I would take the yamaha, hands down.

I like the look of the yamaha better. What are the prices of each? I havent heard either one of them so I couldnt make a call on either. If the subs are comperable in price and performance, the numbers of the yamaha seem high.

mr. lamb fries,

they're in the ballpark of 600USD
i've only heard the velodyne myself and a YSTSW800 (also 1000 watts) from yamaha

sheep,

where did you get the -10 -3db thingies?

All yamaha subwoofers are rated -10dB. If you look in the PDF manual for the YST800 it says, and I'm sure its the same for the 1500.

Go to the velodyne link you posted, and look at the specs, it says it in there. All the velodyne subwoofers are rated to -3dB.

-10db? i read somewhere here that a -6db already grants a manufacturer a waiver to claim anything as their freq. range.

hmmm

would you know if the yamaha bass is tight? i know the velodyne is ... (this is for music)

i only tested the yst800 for movies

I can't remember, this was along time ago. I tested the YST 320. I'm suprised yamahaluver hasn't answered. he has 2 Yst800's and a 320 I think, or the other way around.

I think you would be safe with the Yst 1500. I personally though the velodyne was boomy(might have been DSP).

That Velodyne in question is not Velodyne's top of the line sub. While that Yamaha is Yamaha's top of the line sub.

Most companies only put their best effort into their top of the line stuff.

I haven't heard either. But then again I have read reviews that says that Yamaha model is slow for music.

The YST 1500 is awesome with movies. I'm not sure with music though. I haven't demo the velodyne except their digital drive series which is very good as well.

Having heard both subs extensively, would take Yamaha if I need music and movie, but for movie buffs, I would tilt in favor of Velodyne. I have two YST 800 and the 1500 is surpringly tight for it's size as compared to others in its class.

wow, never thought id hear this from you ... but why would you tilt for velodyne, doesnt movies need the low freq. range? i would have thought it was the opposite, velodyne for music, yamaha for movies

For $600, you should include the velodyne dls5000 15" sub. (just got mine, $579 with free shipping)

I don't like the 5000R

Its too boomy. I don't know if it was the DSP, but the Energy S10.3 was wayyyy tighter, and dug down just as deep.

The energy is only a 10" sub vs. 15" for the velo. I dont think it would fill my 4000 sq ft room as well. Also, the energy weighs 34 lbs, the velo over 80 lbs.

unfortunately, we only have the DD10, VX-10 and most cht series here where i am.

i went to listen to velodyne again ... its very tight, no signs of chuffing, like its not even using full power.

on the test setup, they were using the rotel 1067 receiver ... damn boy! how can those medium sized b&w bookshelves sound clearer than my floorstanding speakers? im guessing its the power behind it.
