Using Receiver as Pre-out, question on ohms.

I have the Yamaha RX-V3800, and it is set to 6 Ohms to drive the Soavos. I just got the Yamaha MX-1 and use the 3800 as Pre-out. My question is does it matter on what 8-6-4 ohm is set on the Receiver when using an Amplifer?

Another question, the MX-1 is able to drive 2 set of speakers, A and B. Is it okay that A-speakers are rated at 6 ohms and B-speakers are rated at 8 ohms. Would that mess up my amp if running 2 pairs of speaker at a different Ohms rating?

Thank you..

If you don't have any speakers hooked up directly to the RX-V3800, then it will not matter what ohm setting you have on the receiver.

Thanks

But my question is does it matter that the MX-1 is driving 1 pair of 6 Ohms and another pair of 8 Ohms? Thanks Adam.

I could only answer the first question that you asked when I posted. I'll look into answering your second one right now.

I sure can't see why you couldn't run those two different sets of speakers. There are no warnings in the manual at all. The only thing that I see is the note on the back panel indicating that you shouldn't use speakers with impedances below 4 ohms if you are running both A and B speakers at the same time.

I suggest you contact yamaha support. They will give you a straight answer. I would guess it doesn't matter.

4 ohm and 6 ohm speakers

You will be current limited by the 4 ohm speakers; the 6 ohm speakers will not be limiting. 4 ohms requires twice the current and twice the power. If you do not have a high current AVR then you will not be able to run at full volume ; maybe only 2/3rds or will get a power trip on the AVR.

And the 4 ohm, 6 ohm , 8 ohm setting on the Yamaha does not benefit you at all, its only purpose is to protect the AVR. It runs part of your power and output through an internal resistor circuit. So if you set it at 4 ohms you effectively cut your maximum power output in half.

Bottom Line: It is better to run 8 ohm speakers unless you have a specifically design high current 94 ohm support) AVR. An alternate solution is to connect Pre-out to a separate power amp to drive lower ohm, more power hungry speakers

Good Luck!
