Hey guys, first time poster.

So I have a problem. I have just bought a new amp, its a Onkyo TS-SR702 and i got a pair of second hand Valdus 500s. I was told they were in working condition when i got them (heres hoping!) but i'm having a problem with only getting sound from the top tweeter and the very top cone on BOTH of them.

Could this be something to do with the speakers or a setting with the amp? Currently I only have these front speakers and yes it is in stereo mode. :)

Thanks!

Its not your receiver, the speakers do not work. Are those speakers biwirable? If so are the jumpers still there? If they are not biwirable and if they are and the jumpers are there, you will have to open them up and trouble shoot them.

Do the battery test on the woofers first when you get the drivers disconnected from the crossover.

I would bet the jumpers are missing as you have four drivers not working. If that is not the problem then you almost certainly have four blown drivers.

No they don't have jumpers, and im pretty certain they can't be bi-wired.

Blown huh. Great :(

They are not biwirable. From doing a little search on the web it seems blown speakers (the tweeters specifically) are not uncommon in these.

You now need to investigate. You need to open up the speakers and remove the drivers that are silent. Connect wires to the terminals of the speakers one by one. Use a 1.5 volt battery and connect it on/off on/off, in other words make and break the circuit with the -ve speaker terminal connected to the -ve of the speaker and the +ve speaker terminal to the +ve of the battery. As you connect the cones should fly forward and as you disconnect go back.

If nothing happens then the speakers are blown. Those speakers are known trouble units, so junk them and don't spend money on them.

If the speakers work, remove the crossover and draw out the circuit and we will advise.

It is unlikely to be a crossover problem, as there is an inductor in series with the woofers, which just about never fail.

But you will need to draw out the circuit for us to help you further.

Unfortunately I think more than likely you have bought useless junk. Do you have redress to the seller?

Figured it out! It was the amp. It doesn't like stereo mode for some reason (i only have 2 channels connects but...) it just creates very unpleasant sounding highs.

Using the setting 'Pure Audio' it seems to work fine. All the drivers are working fine so im not sure what that is about, unless the stereo mode on this means something else :S

Oh well cheers guys, merry christmas

perhaps there is an EQ setting for the stereo mode, and the highs are turned down. go into the settings and look around.
