Using DTS when receiver does not support it

I have a pretty basic setup, nothing too fancy. A Philips DVD712 DVD player, and a Philips FR 963 receiver (which I can hardly find any mention of on the web.. maybe discontinued?) They were both given to me as gifts, so I cannot complain about them

1) I originally thought both parts supported DTS, but I have come to find out the receiver does not. Dolby is working fine though, but I have a few movies that are DTS only.

Currently I am using an optical cable from the DVD to the receiver for audio, but would it be possible to have a connection between the coax out on the DVD to the 6 channel input on the receiver (to give me DTS support)? I would probably need an adapter. I know it would require some sort of adapter, but would it be worth doing if possible? Would I still have both Dolby and DTS in true quality? Or should I just live with Dolby for now ?

2) I also have my pc hooked up to my receiver. I have just a single minijack (left and right) from my pc to a left and right RCA input on my receiver (using a very badly homemade cable consisting of about 20' of cat5, some keystones, and some badly connected ends).

My sound card has an optical output, so I could use a long optical cable (assuming they can go 20 or so feet) but then I couldnt use the optical connection on my receiver for anything else. This goes in hand with the last question, if I can get as good quality (including DTS) support with the 6 chan input, I could have the optical free for my computer. Any thoughts?

- sorry for such a long post. any comments are very appreciated!

If your receiver does not decode DTS it does not matter what digital connection you use it will not work. If your receiver has a 6 channel analog input (multi-channel in) you can use it. That is if your DVD player has a built in DTS decoder/ 6ch out.

There's no way to convert a digital coax connection to a six channel analog connection. If your dvd player doesn't have multi-channel analog outputs (R,L,C,RS,LS,SW) then you won't be able to use/decode DTS soundtracks from DVDs with your current system.

And as far as the computer question, No worries.. I just replaced my homemade cable with a low end pair of rca's.. not super great but at least theres no static when im using it!
