Hey I just connected my DVD player to my receiver (Yamaha RX-V659) with a coaxial cable. I only have two bookshelf speakers.

Did I just do a really stupid thing by not using regular stereo RCA cables? since the coaxial will transport 5.1 sound but I dont have enough speakers.

One thing I noticed is that when I play DVD, the receiver lights up all the icons for the individual speakers and not just FR and FL (front right and front left).

Far far from an expert but, the reciever is just saying it's out putting to all the speakers even tho you don't have them. If you can I would switch the reciever setting to just two speaker set up.

Why not just use the RCA cables there not much in cost.

It will downmix to stereo, I think it is probably a good thing the Yamaha's DACs are being used instead of the DVD player's.:)

Any 75 ohm RCA cable is good for Coaxial Digital audio, and it sounds like cost isn't a factor since the OP already has the cables.:D

You need to instruct your receiver which speakers you have or don't have and select stereo mode to output, not DD5.1 as you will be missing out on lots of info.

I do set it to 2ch Stereo mode but it still lights up all speaker icons.

It will do that regardless, The speaker icons with boxes around them are which speakers are activated. The icons just indicate that 5.1 material is present, boxes around them would indicate that speakers should be using them. If there are boxes around them you should enter you settings and set center, subwoofer, and surrounds to "none".
