using channels 3,4,5,6,7 for other rooms ?

Hi all, I have a fairly nice amp: Sherwood Newcaste that I picked up from Axiom Audio. The amp is presently running in just 2.1 mode.

My near term interest is to run stereo audio to other parts of the house.

The amp ( \100 Watts/channel) does have a mode involving 2nd source to 2nd zone, but because I have an open floor plan, I will never be using a 2nd source,

So - I'm wondering if it makes any sense at all to think about just hooking up four (or maybe five) speakers to the amp's 3,4,5,6,& maybe 7th channel and putting those other channels to work for when I want to fill the house with music?

For amp setting, I think I would be able to use something like 7 channel stereo when wanting to fill house with sound. And then use 2.1 when watching a movie like I do now to turn off the rest of the house speakers.

Is this a bad idea for any reason?

Not really if it works for your use. And I'm assuming you mean receiver not (power) amp?

it is an a/v reciever - 7 channel with 100 watts per channel. http://www.axiomaudio.com/sherwood_r772.html

thanks for the input, after a little consideration, I too decided this might be a bit of trouble, if even possible, from a configuration standpoint. I'm now looking at Niles and Adcom speaker selectors on eBay that apparently protect the ohms rating of your reciever while allowing for a couple sets of speakers to be driven by one channel pair (i.e. 200 watts from my Sherwood I think.)

This should certianly get me started with a couple rooms - and if that power's not enough, perhaps I can add a 2 channel power amp later...
