Using an old Voom receiver as a HDTV tuner. How well does that work?

I'm thinking about getting an old Voom receiver to use just as a HDTV tuner to get over the air HDTV signals. Anybody else doing this? If so, how's does the unit work as a tuner? I think most Voom boxes were Motorola DSR550. I had one when I was a Voom subscriber, but I never used the tuner in it, just received the Sat. signal. They took back that box from me, but the old Voom boxes aren't very expensive with an activated card & remote, so I'm thinking about trying one, but I'd like any feedback from someone else using this set up before plunging myself! I'm just looking for an inexpensive solution to getting an HDTV tuner that works, so I'm open to other suggestions too.

I set one up when on vacation in Phoenix for the people that let us stay at their house (will fix A/V for food/lodging!).

It worked pretty well. It was not the easiest setup that I've ever dealt with as I had no manual for it and was guessing at some features and didn't have any test gear to find which incoming line was their antenna.

But, once it was all figured out, they received most of their local Phoenix HD channels without problem and they looked phenomenal.

Seemed to work well!

I had a couple I sold last year. Like Bmxtrix mentioned, its a little tough figuring everything out w/out any documentation, but once you do, it works pretty well. The tuner itself seems to grab a signal pretty well compared to other HD OTA receivers I've used also.. -TD
