Using an Old Receiver/Amp with a New Receiver Amp

I'm a total beginner here, so forgive me if this doesn't make sense.

I would like to use an older receiver (one with tubes, not circuits) to power speakers so that I get a little warmer sound, but I want the capability to add in lots of modern gadgets like DVD players, 5.1 surround sound, X-Box, S-Video etc.

Is there a way to do this or am I out of my tree?

If you had an old receiver with tube amps and 5.1 inputs (seriously doubt this was even ever made) and a receiver with 5.1 preouts (easy to find) you could do it.
