Using a receiver as a Pre-pro: Yamaha RX-V2700 vs. Denon AVR 4306

Another question from an increasingly confused newbie! The more you learn through research (and this site is an awesome sorce of info), the more the options bewilder you!

Given the relatively few options available for affordable, dedicated pre-pros, I was debating either using the Yamaha RX-V2700 or the Denon AVR 4306 as my pre-pro. Right now my options are:

Option 1:
Yamaha Yamaha RX-V2700 or Denon AVR 4306
Rotel RMB 1095
Rotel RB 1080

Option 2:
Parasound 7100
Parasound 5250
Parasound 2250

Both set ups will be used with a 5.1 RBH speaker set up (1266 etc.). Option 1 is cheaper, but my wife likes the look of Option 2. Any input will be greatly appreciated!!

I would go for an even cleaner set-up, since it looks as though you are going for 7.1.

Or use a receiver as a pre-pro with either amp to save some bucks. I use a Yamaha 1400 with an Adcom 7605 running 4ohm system. Very happy!

I also was just recently in that same dillemma, as the choices are so limited for Pre/Pro's, at a resonable price bracket. I ended up with a full Paradigm Studio setup, and wanted the power to drive them properly and also have the ability to use something as video switching device.. I ended up getting a Pioneer Elite VSX-81 and a Rotel 1095.
I am extremely happy with the results that I can Upscale to HDMI, and have just 1 cable out to my plasma. Works and Sounds Fantastic!!!

I made my choice of a receiver as a temp pre/pro until they work out the wrinkles and come out with more HDMI products, after they work out some of the bugs related to that.

You might also want to check out for more info at AVSforum.com, head into the audio section. Lots of people in the same predictament, with the lack of HDMI pre/pros.

I got my amp used off audiogon and reciever at wholesale, so both for under 2K.

Do you need HDMI? If not, the guys at Outlaw Audio make a couple nice pre/pro that aren't as expensive.

Yes, I do need some power to really get the most out of my speakers, hence my going the separates route.

I was hoping to have basic HDMI capability - It'll ensure that I can keep this receiver for at least 4-5 years till it needs to be replaced.

You could get the the Yamaha and then buy some behringer A500 amplifers to power your speakers, they are 4 ohms stable. You would need at least three amps to power a 5.1 system. And if multi-zoning is an idea of yours you could always spend another $180 and get another A500. I believe the the A500 to be rated at 230 watts x 2 @ 4 ohms, 500 watts bridged @ 8 ohms.
