I have a Denon avr 5803 that is 6 years old. It cannot decode the latest surround sound formats. Is it possible to connect a second avr to the Denon for decoding purposes? Thanks.

Short answer: yes
long one:
you can get something cheap like yammi rx-v665 and use it's pre-outs to connect to your denon's (one of two  8ch multi-chan INs)
or:
get top of the line Denon Pre-Pro like AVP-A1HDCI
or:
Since hd audio is only found on bluerays disks, get br disk player with high quality 8ch analog outs like Oppo BDP-83 or if you want to kick it up a notch BDP-83SE
