just heard that boredsysadmin done gone and assembled a server, and a ubuntu one at that (braver than me). i will be following assassin's server guide to build mine hopefully soon, if cash starts raining down from the sky on me. anyhoo, bored mentioned nzb. i really don't know much about nzb but this got me interested once:

http://htpcbuild.com/usenet/

so i followed along until i got to the part of the guide about picking a usenet provider:

Finding a Usenet Search Provider - HTPCBuild.com

both of these services are gone, shut down. so are about a half dozen others that i have heard mentioned. it seems these places get closed down quicker than liquor stores in utah. so is this worth the hassle? who do you guys use and are you worried that it could go poof any second?

so no one out there has it? really? come on guys. nothing illegal with subscribing to usenet, i will assume you all are following the letter of the law. btw boredsysadmin was asking me if i will use nzb on my to be built server, i wasn't trying to suggest that he used it.

The first rule of the Usenet - you don't talk about the Usenet.
and
b) I only used to read the newsgroups and download various Linux distributions

Here's is slightly outdated, but still relevant info:
Slyck.com - Guide To The Usenet Newsgroups - QuickStart

I highly recommend going with dual machine built out - media server and client. Media server can be easily and cheaply built from common parts. It's doesn't have to be very powerful at all.

Newer versions of Freenas with plugin system is a great way to get media server setup pretty easily without much linux knowledge at all
For Media client aka HTPC - OpenElec with XBMC is truly awesome. Highly recommend it

There are some very dark things on Usenet things that can get you in prison for a long time. I steer far away from that place.

There are things like that all over the internet. All you have to do is avoid them :)

Usenet has been deprecated by major ISP for years now. You're better off in web forums which have supplanted usenet. Back then there was no forum software for stuff like dcomp.vpn usenet discussion thread.

most isp's have dropped usenet, but you still could get premium usenet else where
this is best deal for premium usenet I have yet to see (refer to 1 year pre-paid option)
https://www.usenetserver.com/partners/

I get 11.1MBps download speeds with them pretty much all the time now

Actuall completion may vary a lot from 1hour to 1800 days ... heavy depends on the content
