I posted a while ago about a cheap laptop for my girlfriend. I was reccomended a few and in the end I liked the dell vostro the most. She also likes this laptop, but is having a hard time putting together the money for it. So my question: is buying a used laptop a good or bad idea? If its a good idea where is the best place to buy one from? Thanks for any help.

I got a Toshiba laptop for my daughter and at about 3 years old I had to replace the disk drive and battery pack. I think it was about $120 for a $400 laptop. Works fine now.

I got a laptop for free off Craig's List a couple years a go.

My wife is still using it.

Laptops can take a lot of abuse, so I would try to avoid used.
Watch the weekly promotions on the dell site, or check out their outlet page.

Last year walmart and other big box stores had some cheap laptops on black friday.

I second the recommendation to shop the Dell Outlet web site or call one of the Outlet sales rep's directly, as the site can be a little hard to navigate.

I have purchased Dell refurbished equipment for 4 years at work, laptops included. I like to stay with the Optiplex and Precision line of desktops and the Latitude line of notebooks......the refurbished models in these lines INCLUDE a 3 year warranty from Dell. Others include a 1 year warranty.

On the rare occurances where we have had a problem with a refurb unit, Dell has fixed them within days.

I bought a new laptop @ BB for $430 on sale. The deals @ Dell's outlet were ~$480 for a slightly better unit (slightly faster cpu, more memory), but I didn't want to wait the extra week and a half to get it. I'm hoping I didn't make a bad choice. So far it's working fine, hafta see how it is in 6-9 months.
