Should I buy a used(only a few months old I think) for $1800 from a reputable dealer?

For that price you would be better off with a 3805 and Amp
the 5800 was a good receiver in its day but its processing is dated and now surpassed by even entry level receivers in the $500-600 price range

I kind of figured that. Btw, I recently bought a Yammie 1400 which probably surpasses it. I know the 3805 has little more goodies than my yammie. Ray, Im still going to come and see you, but Im not ready as Im about to build my new family room, about 20 x 20.

Is it an upgraded 5800 or an original? The upgraded units have the same processing as the 5803. Of course, there are some who say the original DACs in the 5800 sounded better than the DSD-compatible DACs in the 5803s.

Also, it has to be more than a few months old, if it is a 5800. Denon introduced the 5803, its replacement, in the Spring of 2002.

That said, I would not place the 3805 above the 5800, and certainly not above a upgraded 5800. The build quality, amplifiers, connectability (i.e 2 sets of multi-ch analog inputs- who needs universal players?) are in different leagues.
Here are the features the 3805 has that a upgraded 5800/5803 doesn't:
-Room EQ
If Room EQ is important, than I would go for the 3805.

As far as the price on the 5800 you mentioned, I couldn't say for sure, but I've seen it cheaper. It is at least 2 years old after all. Disclaimer: I have a 5800, and you can pry from my cold, dead hands.

Regards,
Rob

So you really like your 5800? I was guessing a couple months old, but your right. I just thought is sounded good to purchase, but I have a new Yammie 1400 which is good for now.

Sorry have to dissagree
The 3805 $1000 and a Good Entry Level amp $750 using the 3805 as a pre pro will be better than the 5800 Now if we are talking a 5803 that is different but a updated 5800 is not a 5803 and if you think it is you are kidding yourself
Cheers

You're right the 5800+ and the 5803 are not the same., I'm sorry if I led anyone to believe that. However, the processing/sound quality, etc. are. I will try to detail the differences below- which are numerous. For pure audio, however, most the differences seem rather extraneous to me.

This is a link to a DENON document detailing the differences between the 5800/5800+/5803:
5803_vs_5800up_vs_5800

Also, some more differences are detailed below. Note that the differences betw. the 5800+ and the 5803 are not primarily the kind that affect sonic quality. Although the 5803 does have better bass management from the EXT inputs, which could be useful if you have small speakers up front. The processors, etc. are the same. The newer 5803s (actually 5803As) have Pro Logic IIx and HDCD decoding at the receiver. I have two sources capable of HDCD, so it is not very important to me, nor is Pro Logic.

1. The 5803 has a "trigger out", 5 and 12 volts, the 5800 upgrade does not.
2. The 5803's color difference (component) monitor out jacks are able to up-convert video signals and display on screen information. the 5800 upgrade does not have this.
3. The 5803 has in it's setup menu, a video input mode, which outputs the input signals from the monitor output terminal. the 5800 upgrade does not have this.
4. The 5803 has the ability for the user to setup the method of playback, of the external 1 and 2 input jacks; and also allows the user the ability to adjust the surround parameters of a component attached to those jacks. These two inputs have full Bass Management capability. the 5800's ext 1 and 2 inputs jacks do not have these capabilities.
5. The 5803 has an 0.5 db increment adjustment on its
volume control verses the 5800's 1 db increment adjustment of the volume control.
(Note: The above 5 items are from a post by Harry Grant on the Flagship Receiver & Amplifier Central- 6/11/02).

Hope this is helpful.

Rob
