Bought SONY SXR projection 1920*1080 HDTV a few months ago and now have to move to London. The TV has broadcast format as NTSC/ATSC. I know standard TV format in UK is PAL, but anybody knows (1) if this TV can receive HD program in UK? (2) is there any conversion product in the market that can convert UK standard, digital and HD signals into ones this TV can handle? Thanks a lot!!!

Hi Naper,

first of all, welcome to the forum!

If your TV is NTSC, then you'll certainly need a converter, in order to be able to watch images thru the PAL system while in the UK.

You'll easily find those converters, but what I'm not sure if there's any available for HDTV. As far as I know, I've only seen analog converters though. What I suggest you to do is to contact the followeing site:
www.world-import.com up in IL; they pretty much have what you're looking for. Keep us posted on what's going on.

Cheers / Avliner.

What is the exact model number of your display? Many TVs these days work with both 60hz and 50hz signals without any problem. But, without knowing an exact model number it really is tough to answer your question.

Will he need a voltage converter since they are on 220?

That's once again a model specific question. Some products handle 110/220 without any issue, just an adapter is required, not a converter. Other products need the full on voltage converter.

Over here in the UK broadcast HD is only available from the Telewest Cable TV company or by Sky satellite, both of these set top boxes deleiver HD via component and HDMI, I have Telewest it only allows copy protected fils to be viewed over HDMI.
Terrestrial TV is available by normal aerial or by Freeview, you should be aware that most UK TVs accept the likes of Freeviw via Euro Scart connectors, so apart from any voltage issues this may be an issue

I'm moving to the UK as well in about a month and I'm looking for an answer o the same question. My understanding is that HD broadcasts over HDMI (like skytv, etc...) is the same, but all SD broadcasts over HDMI will not work.

Is it practical to use a PAL/NTSC convertor for standard definition via s-video and use HDMI for all HD broadcasts?

Or would this be a pain in the butt?
