Upmix from stereo to 5.1 or 7.1 in a setup with height channels (7.1.4)?

Hi everyone,

I recently went from a 5.1 to a 7.1.4 system, powered by the Denon AVR-X4500H and an external two-channel amplifier for the mains. The system is used for TV and movies, not much music at all. Native Atmos mixes sound great. 7.1 and 5.1 mixes sound great in their original form, and OK when up-mixed to 7.1.4 using the Dolby Surround upmixer (DSU). However, stereo mixes do not sound good. If kept native, there is no center channel, and I must raise the volume a lot to hear the dialogue properly, and I do not like that. If upmixed to 7.1.4, the sound becomes harsh, overdone and fatiguing. It sounds a bit that way with upmixed 5.1 and 7.1 mixes as well, but it is better. I did not experience this issue at all with my 5.1 setup. Stereo mixes sounded great upmixed to 5.1. The dialogue became much clearer, and the sound level was good.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Do you use an upmixer, and if so, which one and with which type of signal? I really wish there was an option to restrict the upmixer to different setups encompassed by the setup you have. But I don't think there is, is there?
