Upgrading system. Go from 5.1 back to 2-channel??? HELP!

Current setup:
B&W 602 S2's Left, Center, Right
Infinty satelight cheap surrounds
B&W Sub
Sony 333ES receiver
Apple TV-90% of music listening
Pioneer Elite 45A-10% of music listening (SACD, DVD-A)

My movie viewing basically comes from On Demand and Apple TV: both using optical cable to receiver to get 5.1. Didn't get and don't see reason to get a blue ray player right now as I'm not really big into movies and On Demand, ATV seems decent enough for me right now...

Current Use: HT and 2-channel in same setup
70% TV/Movies (of which 90% standard tv I don't see 5.1 benefit from)
30% Music

Small room-14x14, rear speakers are only around 1 foot behind me and to the sides-can't change that.

So...I was looking at upgrading my system in fairly baby steps. replace the 2 mains, then maybe a center channel, then a seperate amp, newer receiver w/ hdmi and audyssey and so on. While at the same time making a big enough jump in each to make it worthwhile.
Thinking of something like the B&W 803-805S's or Salk HT2 or Songtowers. Then I realized I'll have little to no money to upgrade mismatched center and now grossly underrated rears (in an already un-ideal setup with them on either side of me). So for my TV use most sound is 5.1 through the HD channels so 80% is coming from my center which I didn't upgrade at all! I do love a good 5.1 effect filled movie now and again but not that much that it warrants a huge % of my budget. Perhaps if I move and have a better HT room and more funds then 5.1 (or 7.1) is great...but I'm thinking that if my general TV use would probably sound fine in 2.0 or 2.1 and music is almost completely 2-channel am I best just switching the whole thing????
Thoughts:
Speakers in the 2-4K range...
Peachtree Nova (serving as DAC for Apple TV and cable box, Amp, and Pre!)
-or seperate integrated and DAC if Nova isn't powerful enough
Keeping my Pioneer for DVD,SACD,DVD-A

Throwing the B&W 600's and receiver upstairs connected to Airport express for a nice bedroom setup!

This would make for such a simplistic setup in an un-ideal room where I'd benefit the most from, putting the $ where it would be most utilized...
But man, I really might miss the 5.1 more than I think....
Am I crazy? Thoughts please.

Well, I like to use good headphones for the music listening I do. For TV I think a 2.1 setup is fine, personally.

To elaborate, I feel like my headphones give me a much better audio experience than my headphones, but like to keep good speakers around for when company is around.

On one hand, you're not crazy, but OTOH, people will choose one or the other with the given circumstances.

I think bluray has completely changed the HT game. Anything from being able to supersize image with a +600% increase in resolution, to lossless mch tracks for demanding classical music concerts.

Look at the deals section where j garcia posted the pana player + 3 BDs for $140. If you're considering BW803s, then IMO it's a drop in the bucket for the capabilities you gain.

The big elephant in your room is acoustics/setup. If you only have one foot behind you from rears, I might assume that you are simply sitting too close to the back wall. If you must sit that close, you are advised to heavily treat it with broadband absorbers. If you sit that close, many might say to lose them, as well.

Also, your square dimensions puts you at an upward battle.

I agree with you that 90% of TV doesn't really benefit from mch.

Really, you'll have to see for YOURSELF how any speakers will sound in there, to your ears. Rooms can sound sooooooooo differently, it's pretty much impossible to "talk" out a solution. And remember, over half of what you hear is the room.

Please keep your mind as open as possible in regards to both speaker placements and listener placements.

If seating is very centralized, or even just for one person, the higher the changes that a phantom/stereo setup will be the right ticket. And IMO the higher end BW can image like nuts. I've shared a story on a few occasions of suspecting that the center speaker was active, when it wasn't, in a very good demo room.

well, i mean i could do 805's instead of 803's and have that money for a center...true with any brand i'd go with i guess.
I might try watching a 5.1 show in 2-channel that i'd normally like in surround sound and see how i feel...

no i did the exact same thing and i don't miss 5.1, my advice to you is to certainly use a center channel though because stereos biggest problem was the sweet spot, using a center eliminates this. i noticed myself that 2.1 or 3.1 had a very good 3 dimensional sound image by itself and i also noticed i could watch movies with the receiver set in 2ch mode and still get a 3 dimensional experience and not tell the difference between 2.1/3.1 and 5.1 or 7.1. i would also spread the left and right out atleast 6-7 feet if possible if your using a center channel and make sure to angle them so they face on axis towards your ears.
