If you get an HDMI receiver that processes the signal rather than one that just passes it through the receiver, you can get advanced high definition formats such as deep color and lossless audio from Blu-ray discs played on your PS3. How much that is worth to you would be up to you to decide. I would try and see a demonstration of the difference at a good audio specialty store.

HDMI Info.

FYI,
There are no sources that currently output nor displays that support the "Deep Color" part of the HDMI 1.3 spec. Don't worry too much about this feature.

However, a receiver with HDMI 1.1 (or higher) audio processing would allow you to take advantage of the new lossless soundtrack on BluRay discs.

The one I was thinking of was the yamaha 1690. I think thats the model number. my wife works at future shop so the deals are great. the guy told me this model is true 7.1 not matrix like my 7300. its hard to compare unless I had my 7300 right beside it.

Audio formats

I am not aware of any 7.1 source and very few discs have a 6.1 audio track. Most receivers use the Dolby PLIIx DSP to add sound to the surround back channels.

The Yamaha RX-V663 is their new model in the $500 price range.
