Cliffs notes:
Would a budget of ~$1500 for a receiver and speakers, ideally with ability to expand the system later, provide better quality in a 5.1 setup for home theatre than adding a sub to my SONOS playbar plus surrounds?

Hey all! I’m new to the forum, joined in hopes of learning as well as finding a suitable solution for my AV needs. Any advice is much appreciated! While I appreciate a quality sounding system, I’m a relative layman when it comes to AV, so if I’m leaving anything out or missing the big picture please let me know.

Current arrangement in my great room (~20’L x 22’W x 22’H). The back of the room is open to the kitchen, as is one side with built openings to the formal dining area… not an ideal room for home theater it seems, but it’s what I have!

I also have a first gen Play5 (which would be traded to get~$200 off of the sub) and a Play3- both of which I would be willing to sell along with other SONOS gear to get a better setup.

My best guess is that I could get roughly $800 for the lot of SONOS gear, thus with a planned $500 out of pocket for a SONOS sub (if I kept that system) I’m looking at approximately $1300-1500 budget for all new equipment.

For my space, would changing to a traditional 5.1 system provide better sound quality for primarily movies? What gear would you all recommend that could get me there and provide expandability in the future?

I’m currently eyeing the Denon avr-s760h, but seeing mixed reviews on klipsch speakers available from the same source (Costco). Also the Denon would only go to 5.1.2 if I’m reading correctly, and I hope to have a room suitable to having a 7.2.4 setup in the future… though it seems that a receiver capable of that tends to be less budget friendly?

Anybody have time/resources to educate and send me in the right direction?

Thank you all! I look forward to learning.
