Hello!

I have a budget of around $300-500 to improve my turntable system and I was hoping to get some recommendations. This system is mainly for vinyl listening and sometimes Spotify.

What would give me the most noticeable improvement? New turntable? Speakers? Cartridge? Add a subwoofer? Other?

Current setup:
Numark TTX DJ turntable
M-Audio Studiophile AV40s

That's it - pretty simple set-up. I like the simplicity. The speakers sound pretty great but maybe lack a little fullness. The turntable is pretty solid and quiet. My main issue is that there is some inner groove distortion. Also this isn't important for the sound quality but I think the turntable is pretty ugly. I really like the look of the new entry level tables like the Orbit.

Thanks in advance!

Usually better sound is thru the speakers or room acoustics and in your case I think the speakers would be a good start if not looking at speaker placement/room issues. You using a phone for the Spotify? To stick with active speakers you might look at the JBL LSR305s or 308s.

I'd but Audioengine powered speakers before I bought those. I'm sensitive to horn tweeters.

I second jbl lsr speakers recommendation. I don't know much about TT, but you might gain from a new needle

Forgot to ask, what cartridge does the tt have? How many hours on its stylus?

I compared the Airmotiv 5S and JBL LSR305 in home. Lots to like about both. I'd say that they were comparable in overall SQ to me. But the LSR305 won out on a bit more low end extension and price. Returned the Airmotiv 5S. That being said, someone else could easily like the Airmotiv 5S better.
