I have two pieces left to upgrade in my home theater, my receiver and my sub. I am pretty set on buying the HK AVR 635 and a SVS 20-39 sub. The costs of each are pretty close to the same. My question is which should I upgrade fist? Which one will give me the most noticeable difference? I watch mostly movies and digital cable and listen to very little music. My current JVC 5.1 100watt receiver does an alright job but is definitely lacking in video connections and I am sure it is also lacking in power. I am still able to run my DVD player with component cable and my digital cable with S-video cables. My JVC 110W 10" sub is boomy and definitely a weak link in my system. My room is 25X10 with 8' ceilings. I am on a limited budget and should be able to purchase one of the two by July and then the other before next year. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much and I can tell you this forum is a savior for us beginners. .

Go for the sub first!

Since you are watching movies & cable the most I think a Sub would have the most impact; a good quality Sub makes all the difference in the world for Movies!

In virtually all cases, upgrading speakers will matter far more than upgrading anything else. So, naturally, you should buy the subwoofer if what you care about is a significant change in the sound.

upgrading to an svs sub will really make a big difference for HT.

that is the first upgrade i made.
then a new plasma tv followed by front and center speakers.

i still havent replaced my reciever which is also 100wpc.

a powered sub will lighten the load on your reciever which will improve the overall sound.just set your speakers to small and let the sub take care of the bass.
the low end is what requires most of the amps power.

the SVS PCi has a nice 320w amp and the PLUS has a 525w
I would go for the plus.an extra $300 is alot cheaper then a new reciever and a the sub is going to give your system that "WOW" factor.
take your time and get upgrades that will keep you content for a long time.
once you add a good sub you wont feel the need to replace your reciever so fast.

I still am amazed at the earth shaking capability of my sub and i could have gone with less but i know ill be happy with mine for a very long time.

email SVS with your budget, room specs and possible sub locations and they will reccomend a sub.they dont oversell.

for HT svs is hard to beat for the money.

.....agreed....more powerful and defined oscillations down low as per increased linear excursion movement of a larger and more powerful subwoofer element....try the port plugs you will receive if you must, but changing the natural tuning of the enclosure lessens the cleanness and definition of the low oscillations, this is what I found, but you may like them, and you're laying out the green....HT DVD's would be my only consideration for plugs for the effects-factors of Mother-Ships blowing up, machine-gun fire, or dinosaurs walking, most definitely I would not use plugs for CD music....Astech, you stated in your opening post you listen to very little music, and would be using the sub for HT DVD's and digital cable, and your room is a fairly sizable 25x10x8....call SVS for pro opinions for sure, but this suggests to me consideration of the 16-46 Plus powered cylinder....I had two 16-46 Plus's at one time, and the effects for low rumbles during rather quiet scenes was amazing, and the effects of loud scenes was there for sure also....I let my Son-in-law have them as my listening is mostly music, and I went to box subs by SVS....not trying to confuse you, call SVS, describe fully your room and listening preferences, and ask if the powered 16-46 Plus might serve your needs well....good luck, and you can't go wrong with SVS says mule, hee-haw.......

good point mule

you may do better with a larger pci sub or even a box then a smaller plus model.

follow up question

Do you feel that the SVS 20-39 would be enough sub? Two things I forgot to mention. My current Sub is a powered Sub. The other thing is that my room can be completely closed in which I always do during movies. The other question is should I look at another brand of Sub like HSU? Thank you again for your time.
