Upgrade Help Needed - Cerwin Vega Speakers

Spent some time with a friend of mine this week who owns some Cerwin Vega VS series speakers. We both agree they have decent sound especially in the bass area. The mids and highs have always sounded weak and unclear however. We were thinking we might upgrade the midrange and tweeters to something better. Possibly upgrade the crossovers as well. What my question comes down to is. What info is needed to get the job done properly ? Obviously speaker size is the biggest one. But what are the other things I need to look at ? Or is this even reccomended ? Also are there any suggestions on drivers ?

Thanks,
Glenn

Zoiks! Cerwin Vegas are super efficient, and pleasant sounding speakers. I'd say it's a shorter and easier path starting from scratch than trying to monkey with a design that's been optimized to sound a certain way.

CV's woofer cabinets tend go for the rock-the-house bass, which isn't too condusive to tweaking in accurate mids and tweets.

I've kept my DCMs, which are kind of similar to the CV's, and they still come in handy for playing loud parties (my high accuracy speakers are dreadfully inefficent). The DCM's are also very forgiving when I play some poorly recorded music, and the CVs tend to be forgiving as well.

That's my 2 cents.

I expect change. :)

Youre right Gregz the Cerwin Vegas are an ok speaker. Especially when opened up. :)

I would think however with some better drivers and possibly a new crossover things could sound better. We could purchase some new speakers but that takes the fun out of it. :p Looking at prices im thinking we might be able to do this for 120. Maybe a bit more or less. Am I way off on cost? Even if it does not work out we can always use the drivers and build something else. :D Where just looking to have some fun and experiment.

Cheers

How is the finishing work coming on the subs ?

Hey, I can relate to that! Sure, you can get clearer more up-front mids and smoother tweets and come out smelling like roses. Slightly warm roses are just as sweet. :)

Huh? What subs? You must have me confused with someone else... Ok, I admit that my work has slowed down just a wee bit. Maybe come to a screeching halt. The problem was that I got them up and running, and now there's not nearly the incentive as there was when they were a pile of wood on the floor. I'm looking forward to finishing them, though. Gotta get them done before spring comes into full effect if I'm to have a chance.

Happy tweaking on those Cerwins!

I've always wondered what a pair of vega bookshelves (namely my v-5S that i'm using as my PC speakers at the moment) would sound like with a good titanium dome.

...if I can find one that is the right size without cutting up the cabinet I might give it a whirl.
