My main receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR502. I use it mostly for music, but I'll be using it for movies soon and moving to a larger room. I have an opportunity to buy a TX-SR803 at a good price. How big of an upgrade would it be? I don't keep up with the HT side of things much, so I'm not clear on what all the features are.
The only obvious thing is the auto setup, but I think that only adjusts levels and delay rather than doing EQ like Audyssey. Will the 802 do any sort of processing that will make music sound better in surround than the 502 does with Pro Logic II?
The 803 weighs 30 pounds vs the 502's 22 pounds. It claims 105 wpc vs 75 for the 502. The 803 says it can take 4 ohms, but I read in a review that it has a switch for 4-ohm usage, that restricts the power output. Most of my speakers are 8 ohms nominal except for one 4-ohm pair I got cheap on Craigslist that I may use, or may flip.
Oddly, the later 805 weighs way more, 50 pounds vs the 803 at 30 so I assume its amps are significantly stronger. It seems to be out of my price range on the used market, though.
