upgrade from ancient to used/new-ish

I am currently running my oppo BDP-83 through the stereo outs into my ancient(1992) Sony STR-D1090. Its a fairly capable for being so old (120w x 2 in stereo mode) One of the reasons I purchased the 83 was because it internally decodes all the newest formats and can send them out over the 7.1 outs. I was wondering if I could save a few dollars and find an older, high end receiver that had 7.1(or even just 5.1) inputs. It wouldnt even need it to have HDMI.

Would that be a viable option? Could you make any recommendations on what models I should look for? Denon, Marantz, Rotel, etc.

I would be curious to see what I could get for around 500-600 bucks.

Thanks,
James

That money will get you a flagship Yamaha RX-V1 from 2001. I expect that you can find flagship receivers from the other brands you mentioned in the same price range. Going down a bit from top-of-the-line should get you something newer for the same price.

The Denon AVR-5800 can usually be had in that range. If I was ready to upgrade, I'd sell you mine.
