i have an 10 year old Onkyo A-SV620 reciever here are the specs

Stereo Mode 120watts/channel min RMS at 8 ohms both channels driven with no more than 0.08 % THD
continuous power output: 2x140 watts at 8 ohms (DIN)
Surround Mode F/R and center = 75 watts rear channel 25 watts

Imput sensitivity for cd: 150mV/50 kohms

i think with that info u guys will be able to help me.

my new setup is only for stereo mode as i only listen to music.

the current Onkyo 620 only has analog inputs, so i was thinking of getting a new reciever with digital inputs and better DACs. and also a pure direct mode. now if i get a new complete stereo system will i really be able to hear the difference.

or will i better be suited sticking with this reciever just get a cd player with better DAC's and pairing the reciever to better speakers. this option will be less costly for me.

which one would u guys do, and remmeber this is only for music. i dont need neighboor hood ground shaking sound system. hahah

also did i mention this reciever weights 27 pounds while i was comparing it to a current onkyo system with the same ouput and the new Onkyo SR504 which has about the same power output and it only weighs 20 pounds. thats a huge difference.

all ur feedback would be greatly appreciated. btw ive had my current Onkyo 620 for 10 years, and it still sounds as good as the day i bought it.

Keep the 620, if you intend on just using it as a stereo receiver and no surround sound.

IMO speakers are the heart of your system. Get the best you can within your budget and build your system around them as time and finances permit.

keep the reciever

I am no expert but if it was me doing the upgrading I would keep the reciever and update the cd player and speakers. I would do the speakers first as I feel they effect the sound quality you hear more than any other piece of equiptment all things being equal. I would do the cd player next as they have made some great improvements to them in the last 10 years. Just my opinion.

You do not stand to gain a lot by upgrading your reciever, as long as you want it only for stereo applications. Your old reciver can still give a run for their money to many newer ones, when it comes to stereo perfrmance. Yes, if it has got any servicing done or its not as it was when you bought it, then you may consider upgrading. 120watts/channel at 8 ohms into two both channels from 20 Hz to 20 KHz at no more than 0.08 % THD is a very good spec. Stick to it save teh money and spend more on speakers/player.
