Upconverting & BR or just BR?

In a surprise move, my wife got us a new Sony LCD for Christmas. It was quite unexpected and now I'm faced with a decision on how to get the most out of it.

The issue is this. How effective/capable is the upconversion capability in BD players? Do I want to get an OPPO 98X and a BD player or can I find a BD with equally good conversion capabilities and eliminate a box.

OR

With my older model Toshiba SD3800 set to 480p, will the internal scaling on the Bravia W4100 produce an equal quality picture? (I suspect not, but I though I'd through it out there as an option)

Thanks

Sony displays do a good job of upconverting SD DVD. Pioneers and Panasonics do as well.

Mitsubishi DLP's absolutely suck at scaling SD.

BD player upconversion varies from player to player. I didn't even say mfgr. to mfgr.

Good upconverting Samsungs
BD-P1200
BD-P25xx
BD-UP5000

Not so good upconverting Samsungs
BD-P1400
BD-P1500

The LG BH200 is an excellent upconverter. The BD300 is not so much.

Sony and Panasonic models widely vary as well.

Until Oppo comes out with a Blu-Ray player nothing else can touch the 983 in terms of SD DVD upscaling performance. However, if you have less than a 65" screen, you won't notice much of a difference between the Anchor Bays, Reons, Realtas and Marvells in real time viewing.

I am totally happy with my Samsung's 2550 sd upconversion. While I am a fanboy, I have followed a lot of threads on this unit and people around the country share this belief.
