Upconversion Questions

I've been doing a ton of reading last few days about A/V Receivers, and am trying to pick what would work best for me. I'd really like to cut down on the # of wires I need to run to my TV, so I think upconversion is for me! I'd like to buy an entry level receiver, under $400. I'm going to be connecting a HD box, as well as DVD, plus older components with sVideo and composite.

I've found the Onkyo TXSR574 for about $299 or $199 refurb. That upconverts composite and S video to component, and also has HDMI but doesnt upconvert.

The next model up 575 does up convert Component to HDMI but does nothing with composite or svideo.

Has anyone seen any other options out there that are as good as or better than these 2? Is there something I need to beware of with upconversion? I've tried to find other brands that do upconversion, but no one is clear other than Onkyo.

Anyone have bad experiences with refurb Onkyo?

I appreciate all help you guys can provide.

I think the $500 Harman Kardon AVR-247 upconverts & upscales all sources to 720p via HDMI 1.1. Can you find that on eBay?

Welcome to the forum, bgleroy!

You might want to also look at the Onkyo TX-SR605. It will upconvert all video signals to HDMI (I checked the owners manual), and it costs $406 at Amazon at the moment.

I don't have any experience with Onkyo refurbs.

I used the sr605 in a customers home and it would not pass hdmi video at all. I got sound but no video. We did this install as a favor for a friend. the customer had all of the gear already. We used the component.

Sounds like you didn't assign the HDMI inputs or have the incorrect setting for HDMI Monitor Out.

Agree with MDS,

normally is the other way around; i.e., when you got an HDMI video switvher AVR, you do have video but no sound at all, unless you plung an optical cable, so there's gotta be the HDMI assignment for sure.
