After a couple weeks in our movie group of really awful "art" films (Tiny Furniture and Something), it was time for some car chases and senseless action. Unknown was, IMO, actually not bad for what it is. Liam Neeson is invited to a conference in Berlin, gets in an accident, is in a coma, and when he wakes up, somebody else is in his identity, attending the heavyweight conference and hanging with his wife; nobody knows who he is.
Things get very complicated, he meets a girl and much of what happens requires car chases and things blowing up. In short, a basic action movie. It's also a tour of Berlin streets with a mainly German cast. Those who watch German movies will recognize Diane Kruger (Inglorious Bastards) as "the girl", a small but surprisingly nuanced role for Bruno Ganz (who was Hitler in the great Downfall) as an obsolete STASI agent and Sebastian Koch (from the equally great The Lives of Others). Don't have real high expectations and don't analyze the plot twists too much, but this sure beats the crap out of Tiny Furniture.
