Uncompressed PCM ??

I picked up Hellboy on BD, in the sound set up there is "uncompressed PCM 5.1" when I select this I only get sound from center and front speakers. I'm playing it on a PS3 with optical into my Sony STR DG520 and HDMI into the LG Plasma. Now on the Sony I usually just leave it set on AFD (auto format decoding?), if I set it to Dolby PL1 or 2 the rears will show up. Is this just because the Sony is a low end machine or do I not have something set right?
Or is just the PS3?
Thanks Steve

Optical cable can only handle 2 channel UPCM if I'm not mistaken.

Uncompressed PCM requires an hdmi connection to your receiver. It works the same way as TrueHD and DTS-HD/MA. With the optical you can only do DD and DTS.

I have tried running the HDMI right from the PS3 to the Sony but as far as I know it just passes the video through to the TV, doesn't pick up the audio. Is that just because it's a low end system and does not have that capability, or will it only pick up uncompressed audio through HDMI and would still require a seperate (optical) feed for all compressed audio.

Your AVR only has HDMI pass-through, so it will not pass audio (only video). You will be stuck with either selecting a compressed audio track from the BD or decoding the uncompressed track by applying DPLII, etc.

You have to step up to at least the STR-DG720 to get audio through the HDMI.
