Are the 161's I use for rear surrounds of any value or are they crap like the Cubes?

Are these suitable for outdoor use under cover?

Thanks

Even though they are under cover they are still exposed to the elements of humidity, dampness, and heat. I guess it would all depend on where you live and the climate.

But I don't think they are classified for "outdoor" use.

Same problem with the paper driver cones.
Also the open port is a perfect place for bees to nest.

Since rears and surround are for emphaisis and not the main speakers, you could probably get by with the Bose 161s for awhile.:D I can tell you some excellent inexpensive speakers you could use for surrounds: Cambridge Audio S30 for $219 /pair. http://spearitsound.amazonwebstore.com/Cambridge-Audio-S30-Speakers-Natural-Oak/M/B00196SJOI.htm?utm_campaign=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle

I am not sure that even under cover the paperspeaker cones would stand up outdoors; but you could try

Good Luck -- .... You are on the road to Audophile recovery :) :)

P.S. - I have empathy for you; I too had a sorted audio background: 901s, 501s, 501S 101S, center speaker, wave radios. Boy did thye have good marketing

Bose 161's are not just surround speakers. They can be used as stereo speakers.

I agree but are they of any value as a book shelf stereo speaker maybe in a Den or office or do they suffer from poor specs like the cubes?

I think they would be OK for background music. But if your looking for serious 2 channel listening--no.

Mazersteven,

Unfortunately, I know more about Bose speakers than i ever wanted to know. I used to be a Bose bigot. I have had lots and lots of experience with Bose form 901s to 501s to 301s to 101s and Bose center channel and Bose wave radios. I fully realize that the OPs current 161s could be used as front or center speakers, but I would not put them in any system as such. There are many, many other speakers that sound better than the Bose speakers. If a speaker such as the Bose 161 is used for surround or rears, then they are not the primary speaker and are used for enchancement. In such a position as surround or rear , the Bose 161 could possibly be acceptable,

Yes, but I wouldn't put them as the mains or as a stereo speaker! That is just my opinion and your opinion may be different. When I first got a pair of 901s I thought they were the best speaker around, but that was a long time ago and I have improved my systems and listening skills since then. I have since replaced most of my Bose components; but still have some .

well .....

I see a great motto here.

Bose: Possibly acceptable when quality doesn't matter!:D
Very perceptive Mr. Schmoe. I still have some 101s as the surrounds in my garage system :D:D actually pretty cool having surround in the garage, had to build little shelves in between the so as not to conflict with garage doors when they were open. ;) And when I upgrade my sub to an SVS PB13-Ultra next year i will also have a Klipsch sub in the garage!

LOl still have a pair of 301s connected to an older Yamaha to the keyboard in the music room.

But I am on the road to Bose recovery ... to being a real audioholic. Wait I forgot still have two Bose wave radios, but have bought a Sony XDR-S3HD HD Radio, but right now it seems to be the iPod bas in the computer niche.

Okay I "red" the links, but what the heck is a red dot award? I have never hear of it! :D :D Minus are you pulling our legs ??? :D:D
The Red dot design award is a large and coveted[1] international product design prize awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. The aim of the prize is to honor outstanding design quality and trendsetters.

The kicker is designers and producers can apply for the prizes with the winners being presented in an annual ceremony.

The fact that you have to apply and are not recognized in set field and invited to compete tells me how little this award means. Who are they competing against?

The people that are awarded the nobel peace prize apply to win the award right:rolleyes:.

Actually, the design award might be about aesthetics rather than quality or function. There are some great sounding but super ugly speakers out there. (There are even more great looking but not so great sounding speakers.)

A bowl of sand can serve as an effective ashtray. However, there are much better looking alternatives.

Many would argue the Infinity Cascade series is more about paying for looks vs. the Betas.
