I just received a pair of the Ultrasone Pro 900's today and decided to give them a listen. I purchased these used so I assume they have a bit of burn in on them already. What I'm finding is that what I thought was a 'bass head' can, seems to be very lacking in my opinion. This is all being powered by a 160gb iPod classic, FWIW
I'm noticing very bright high's, almost a bit fatiguing at moderate levels. The bass to me seems weak. It feels like it is tight but not what I expected from a 'bassy' headphone. I compared them to my AT M50x, and I notice a ton of difference. The M50x seems to punch the bass much harder than the 900. For example, in "Plugged In" - Rollz (Bassnectar Remix),
, at the 2:11 mark there is a long roller that is very pronounced on the M50, and very subtle on the 900. The highs around the 2:40 mark seem mushed together and sloppy, almost overpowering. Remember, this is all direct from iPod at 320kbs.
The difference in volume produced is very noticeable. The 900's are much quieter at the same level. Is this due to the difference in impedance? Most people said you really don't need an amp to power these but I'm really shocked at how lacking they seem.
I wonder if there may be something wrong with the pair I received. Is there somewhere that anyone here on the forum has experience with both sets and can tell me if I'm crazy or if I need an amp for full potential on these.
