Ultimate set up? (Advice much appreciated)

Hey,

Basically, we recently purchased an Apartment in London, and hired a local company to fit us the home entertainment. Now I've done all the reading up I can, and I'm convinced that they have chose the right equipment, however a second opinion from people who know what there talking about would be great.

The home entertainment system consists of fitting out main setups in 3 rooms: The main reception room, Master Bedroom, and Bedroom 2.

The main reception, which will be the cinema consists of a 7.1 setup using in wall and in ceiling speakers, with a 61" Plasma:

  • The plasma, which from reading up seems up there with the best, the Sony KDEP61MRX1, which will be fitted seamlessly into the wall. (Bad thing about this, is that they have to reinforce the wall because it won't take the weight)
  • The speakers chosen are from Atlantic Technology, heard of them? The models used are the IWTS-20LCR THX for the in-wall (x 3), and the ICTS-83 in-ceiling trimode (x 4)
  • The subwoofer (If there is anything I doubt, it would be this part of the set- up) The REL Stampede subwoofer (Using a QED subwoofer cable)
  • For this part of the setup, the Denon AVC-3805 Amp will be used, great reviews, can this be backed?
  • The floor is wood.

The master bedroom will consist of either a 7.1 or 5.1 set-up, again keeping everything in-wall and in-ceiling (Still debating, I want 7.1, but it's already wired for 5.1) . With a 50" Plamsa:

  • Again sticking with Sony, but this time the 50" variant of the model, KDEP50MRX1.
  • Again, as throughout the setup, in-wall and in-ceiling speakers are being used, but this time a lower end set up, 1/3 of the price of the ones in the reception room, naturally since it's a bedroom. The speakers chosen this time are from the company, Monitor Audio. The "gold" range will be used with either consist of 3 x In-Wall and 2 x In-ceiling for the 5.1 set-up or 3 x in-wall and 4 x in-ceiling. If anyone is curious, the 3 in-wall are mounted for the front left, centre, and front right. The in-ceiling for the rest of the positions in both setups (5.1 and 7.1).
  • The subwoofer used this time will be the Mordaunt Short MS909A, anyone have feedback on this model? Along with a QED subwoofer cable.
  • Again, a separate Denon AVR 3805 Amp will be used for this part of the set-up.
  • It is a carpeted floor.

For the smallest bedroom, Bedroom 2, a surround set up is not possible, or more so pointless. There just isn't enough room space. There is will consist of a 2 speaker set up with no subwoofer and a 42" Plasma:

  • Same model of plasma but again going down in size, the KDEP42MRX1 will be used. (I have always been a fan of sony, to me it seemed either I go hitachi or sony throughout the setup of the screens, it came down to aesthetics in the end.
  • Speakers being used are from Monitor Audio but are the lower end, "Silver" model x 2.
  • Again a separate Denon amp will be used, however the high end 3805 is not needed, and therefore the AVR 2805 was used.
  • It is a carpeted floor.

The small parts of the set-up include the kitchen and two ensuites:
  • The kitchen will probably consist of a small LCD, undecided as of yet, with the Speakercraft Dual Tweeter Speaker - 6.5DT.
  • The master en-suite T.V. will be the 17" wide-screen bathroom model from Tilevision. Sound being provided from Speakercraft Waterproof 8" dual tweeter speaker 8.1T.
  • The bedroom 2 en-suite will have a small LCD most likely with sound being provided by Speakercraft, again the 6.5DT variant as used in the kitchen.

**Still with me? Sorry about this long post, but I don't want everything to be bought and fitted then to hear: "x has a problem with x". This is a lot of money and I sourced all the T.V, amps, and subs prices myself. (The company that decided on the set-up tried to pull one off with the pricing thinking I wouldn't care)**

As for DVD players etc, undecided, been looking at that Kaleidscape system, basically a DVD Ipod with a lot of space. However, I'm afraid that there will be quality loss. The website say the dvd is copied "bit for bit" but still not convinced. A friend of mine, a lady, who knows about all this stuff :)eek: :p She's been a great help) says she's going to a show this January/ February? Can't remember the exact month. She said they show all the latest equipment and that she would look into it for me.
I will probably go for the Marantz DH9300 Hard Disk Music server for music.
All cables used are from QED as recommended by the comany I' using.

Finally, How is it all going to be controlled? Crestron.
  • CP2E Central Controller
  • TPMC-10 wireless touch-panel x 3 (Reception room, Master bedroom, Bedroom 2)
  • Crestron to lutron interface (needed).

I think that basically covers all the main aspects of the set-up, all wires are hidden in wall and are relayed back to the utility room where everything will be put on a rack.

I really appreciate whoever read this post, even if it was just for a quick glimpse. Advice, criticism are more then welcome, if not wanted.

Once again,

Thank You

Jesus! You dropped some serious coin on setting your place up. Are you aware how far away you need to set back from a 61" TV? its gotta be like 25 feet or more. I dont have to much info to pass on to you, but if you are using the Denon 3805 have you considered the 2910 DVD player? I just ordered on and the picture looks great. It has the DVI output which is also great.

Hey,

I was looking at that, but the kaleidescape seemed like a great idea, no more fumbling around for dvd's. The reception room can accomodate the 61", but only just.

The thing I'm worried about is the difference of quality between floor standing speakers and in-wall/in-ceiling. Since I have never heard a in-wall/in-ceiling (Excluding a cinema), I'm not sure what to expect.

Thanks for the input!

Sharpshot,

Your interest seems to be getting feedback for the in wall speakers. I will let more qualified people address that.

So you are in London...England, I assume. And 2005 should be the year HD becomes available or better accessible.

May I suggest that you plan to have a multi room Digital Video Recorder (DVR) in your setup. They are available for cable service (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD) and will become available for Satellite next year from Dish in the US. I say this because you can then plan to record HD programs or HD movies in advance and play them back when it's convenient plus you can skip the commercials. Quality movies processed by the movie studio to HD (digital conversion) carry outstanding DD5.1 sound as well. Most sporting events in the US carry DD5.1 sound and it's like being physically there. But keep in mind that the normal way to get a DVR is through the provider because there are numerous software updates and programming updates required and they are transmitted by the provider.

Sometime in the next year, you should be able to get an HD-DVD or the Sony Blu-Ray DVD. Your system cannot be without HD...makes all the difference.
