Alright audio geniuses I need some trouble shooting help.

I have started getting a crackling kind of sound from one of my mains. The sound is sporadic but seems to be showing up consistent. First noticed it a month or so ago. Seems now to be showing up with more frequency.

I have switched the mains around and it is not the speaker itself. The noise stays on the R front regardless of whats there. I have checked the wiring, seems good. Not as noticable at really low volumes and at reference level the bass covers it up. The noise is not input specific (xbox, apple tv, etc). Even in Pure mode (skipping processor) it is still there.

Here is the details:
Klipsch RF-82's:
Onkyo tx-sr876 (140w per channel) 82's can take 150w, shouldn't be a over power problem.:
Mains cross over set at 80hz:
System has been in place and running for 3 years. Probably 2,000 working hours

I am fearing this is a reciever issue. Any thoughts???

Judging from your description of the problem and how you investigated it, it sounds like something is starting to go wonky in that receiver. I don't know what the deal is with Onkyo lately, but they have been troublesome to many owners.

It sounds as if that channel has a transistor breaking down, or a noisy cap.

It's service or new receiver time.

If the unit has pre outs, you could by a separate power amp, which is always a good move.

My 805 had many problems too. I read Onkyo moved the the plant from Japan to save on labor costs etc. Good idea TLS Guy on buying seperate amps and use it as pre/Pro.

Thanks for the replies everyone. So yes receiver issue seems to be the unanimous vote as I suspected.

TLS does have an excellent point and I have been looking hard at the Emotiva Amps.

Or the new Yamaha AVR's look fantastic....

Sounds like I better get to working on a power point show for my wife just like the kid on TV does about getting a puppy. Lol

"I have checked the wiring, seems good."

That's not exactly world-class problem diagnosis right there ;)

Replace the wire in the affected channel. See if it persists.

Good idea......... speaker wire is not expensive. Maybe he will get lucky.

If you switched the speaker wires and the speakers (left to right) at the back of the receiver (not just move the speakers) Then you have ruled out both the speaker and the speaker wire.

Well first I kicked the tires. Then I stared into the engine compartment. Then I had a beer. At least thats how I think you fix it?

Yes Sir, This is what I really meant by "checked the wiring" First moved speakers, then switched wires behind receiver and still noise on Front Right.

TOO FUNNY.. when I first kicked the tires......... I too wondered if you swapped wires then it hit me looking at your equipment that I bet you did swap front speaker wires. I do see some rookies forget the basics and you know about assume... :D Go RCA side of Onkyo and see if pre amp and amp on that side is OK. if so HDMI is going out like my 805 did several times in 2 years. Yamaha time...A2000 or A3000 the newer A series is out and there are still some of these new in a box. this is how it starts with some of the SX-SR series AVR...hope you get lucky and just use it as pre/pro and Emotive 5X200 amp.:)
